Iloha Seaview Hotel

Set on the west coast of Réunion, Iloha Seaview Hotel is built around a three-hectare tropical garden, with views stretching across Saint-Leu Bay. The atmosphere is sociable rather than formal, with a pool terrace, a restaurant overlooking the bay and a pool bar where the day can wind down without requiring a change of personality. You get a three-star hotel with enough going on to keep a couple, a family or a small group occupied, but without turning the place into a resort-sized parade of activities.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside French, so you can sort out the practicalities without resorting to hand signals and hopeful pointing. Families are well catered for, with dedicated accommodation, children’s meals, babysitting and board games, while couples have the gardens, the views and the Cas’Akéa spa for the less energetic part of the evening.

There are 82 rooms and bungalows, spread through the grounds. The setting is leafy and open, with the Indian Ocean close enough to shape the view even when your immediate priority is a shower, a cold drink and somewhere to sit down.

The address is 44 rue Georges Pompidou, in Pointe des Châteaux, Saint-Leu, on Réunion’s west coast. The Indian Ocean is about 300 metres away, while the walk to the protected lagoon and beach access is around 600 metres. This is not a hotel with its own strip of sand outside the door; you walk to the lagoon, then return to the garden and pool when you have had enough salt for one day.

Saint-Leu Beach is around 3 km away by road. The nearby Kélonia sea-turtle observatory is just 300 metres from the hotel, and La Maison du Coco is about 1 km away. The Botanical Gardens Mascarin are around 2 km away, with the Salt Museum and Stella Matutina Museum each around 6 km away. The location also puts you between the mountain and the lagoon, with the island’s west-coast sights within reach by car.

For dinner away from the hotel, Leu Rikiki is around 250 metres away and Sarah Beach around 2 km away. A hire car is available through the hotel, which is the sensible tool for reaching the more scattered beaches, museums and gardens.

Every room and bungalow has air conditioning, a veranda, a flat-screen satellite TV, a safe, a mini-fridge, a Nespresso machine, a courtesy tray and a private bathroom with an Italian shower and hairdryer. That is a practical combination when you return hot, tired and still carrying the day’s humidity around with you. Put the cold water in the fridge, turn down the air conditioning and let the room do its job.

For two people travelling light, the Standard Room keeps things straightforward, with a king-size bed and a compact layout. If you want more room to spread out, or need a little separation between sleeping and living time, the bungalows make more sense. The kitchenette options add a refrigerator, kettle and space for simple self-catering, which can be useful when a full restaurant meal is not what your appetite has in mind.

Families should look first at the Family Bungalow or the larger kitchenette room. These are the choices that give you room for several people rather than asking everyone to negotiate around one bed and a suitcase. Family accommodation is available for up to four guests in the largest option, while cots can be requested for younger children; extra beds are not available.

Verandas and balconies give you somewhere to sit outside without going all the way to the pool. Garden views are available, and the property also has soundproof rooms. All rooms are non-smoking, with smoking areas elsewhere on the grounds.

Breakfast is served as a buffet with a continental selection, giving you the useful start to a diving day: coffee, food on a plate and no need to go hunting for breakfast elsewhere. Le Kotémer handles breakfast, lunch and dinner, on a shaded terrace above Saint-Leu Bay. Its cooking is creole, inventive and mixed in its influences, with fresh local and seasonal ingredients at the centre of the menu.

Friday evening is the night for Réunion specialities at Le Kotémer, with dinner, traditional music and dancing. It is a proper island-focused meal rather than a generic themed buffet with a flag stuck in it. The chef, Kevene Marimoutou, works with local produce while bringing in influences from further afield.

La Trattoria takes a different route. It is a brasserie-style restaurant built around dishes to share, with a panoramic Indian Ocean terrace, open continuously from 14:00 to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Useful timing for the odd late lunch or a meal that does not need to follow the hotel timetable too closely.

Leu Bar sits beside the main pool and serves cocktails made with Réunion rum, fresh seasonal fruit juices, homemade tapas, coffee and arranged rums. There is a billiards area in the lounge. The ice-cream parlour works with local flavours including goyavier, tangor, mango, lychee, pitaya and Victoria pineapple, alongside the classics. Diving does not make you immune to dessert; it merely gives you a better excuse.

Two outdoor pools give you a choice of pace. The main pool is heated during the austral winter, while the pool near the Guétali rooms is not heated. Sun loungers, umbrellas and pool towels are available, so you can claim a horizontal afternoon without having to improvise with a room towel and a chair.

The Cas’Akéa spa is the hotel’s quieter piece of equipment, with individual and duo massage rooms, a double bath and an area for beauty treatments. Massages, facials, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures are available, with treatments using scents and ingredients associated with the Indian Ocean, including coconut, Mayotte ylang-ylang, vanilla and Réunion vetiver. The spa opens daily from 09:00 to 19:00, which leaves room for a treatment before dinner rather than forcing you to make a day of it.

For something more active, there is table tennis, billiards and board games. The hotel also offers a botanical trail, hiking, golf, horse riding, paragliding and helicopter flights. Whale watching is part of the programme from June to October. Kélonia, the sea-turtle observatory, is around 300 metres away, while the Saint-Leu market, La Pointe au Sel and the Mascarin Botanical Conservatory give you several ways to spend a non-diving day without simply moving from lounger to bar stool.

Evenings can include a Saturday dinner concert, with styles ranging from rock and jazz to soul, folk, world music and French songs. Friday brings the creole dinner show. There is enough variety for a couple who want one organised evening, without making every night an obligation.

Pierrefonds Airport is around 28 km away by road, roughly a 30-minute drive. Roland Garros Airport is around 54 km by road, with a drive of about 45 minutes. An airport shuttle is available, either privately or as a shared service, and should be arranged with the hotel. You can also reach the property by bus from Roland Garros using Réunion’s regional and west-coast networks.

Free private parking is available on site without reservation, and electric-vehicle charging points are installed at the hotel. Car hire is available if you want to explore the island independently. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and luggage storage is available for the awkward hours between leaving your room and leaving the island.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is by 11:00. The hotel has a 24-hour front desk, and early check-in or late check-out can be requested. The expected arrival time should be shared with the property, particularly if your flight lands late or your surface interval has acquired its own timetable.

Children of all ages are welcome. Children aged 13 and over are charged as adults, cots are available on request and babysitting and children’s meals are available. Assistance animals are the only animals accepted. A bank card is required on arrival as a guarantee, and smoking is restricted to designated areas; rooms and restaurants are non-smoking.

The hotel holds the European Ecolabel for tourist accommodation, obtained in 2015. It is part of Hotels & Co, a group with a stated sustainable-tourism approach.

The practical feature most visible to a traveller arriving by car is the presence of charging points for electric vehicles. The hotel’s environmental work is presented as an ongoing part of its operation, rather than a separate activity added to the holiday brochure. For you, that means the sustainability claim comes with a named certification and a useful facility on the ground.
