Mellieha Holiday Centre

You come here for space, self-catering freedom and a resort that works as a base for both sea days and slower ones. The Mellieha Holiday Centre has 188 single-storey holiday homes, arranged around shared facilities rather than stacked in one large hotel block. Local sandstone and architecture shaped by Danish architect Hans Munk Hansen give the place a character of its own, without turning it into a museum piece.

English is spoken by the hotel team, so practical conversations at reception, car hire arrangements and day-trip planning are straightforward. Couples can settle into their own bungalow and private courtyard, while families or several generations travelling together have room to spread out. The atmosphere is more village resort than formal hotel: useful when you want to come back from the coast, shower, eat and carry on with the evening without dressing the whole operation up as an occasion.

You are in Mellieħa, at the northern end of Malta, beside Ghadira Bay and within a protected Natura 2000 area. The resort sits about 300 metres from the sea, with direct underground access for residents to the white-sand beach at Ghadira Bay. Mellieha Bay Beach is also around 500 metres away on foot, so the coast is properly part of the daily geography rather than a view on a brochure.

Ghadira Nature Reserve is about 350 metres away, placing birdlife and open protected land close to the resort. For a change of scenery, the Birdlife Sanctuary Center is around 6 km away and the Malta National Aquarium around 10 km. Valletta is about a 30-minute drive, or around 50 minutes by bus, while Malta International Airport is roughly 25 km away by road.

You can walk to Il Padrino and Ventuno, each around 500 metres away, and the Great Dane Restaurant is about 400 metres away on foot. The resort also has free private parking, which makes a hire car a sensible option for reaching Malta's wider collection of bays, towns and historical sites.

The bungalow layout suits divers who prefer a proper base rather than a room that asks you to live out of one suitcase. The larger homes have a lounge with seating, a kitchen area with a fridge and kettle, two separate bedrooms, a private furnished courtyard and, for the bungalows, a roof terrace. That gives you somewhere to sit, sort the day's clothes and leave the wet towels to their own devices without turning the bedroom into a storage cupboard.

Couples have smaller choices, including the Studio with its extra-large double bed, while a one-bedroom bungalow gives you more living space and a separate private outdoor area. If you are travelling with family or another pair of divers, the two-bedroom layout is the practical pick: separate sleeping spaces, a lounge, and a kitchen for the moments when a full restaurant meal is more effort than the dive itself. Family rooms are available, and some bungalows are adapted for wheelchair users.

Inside, you have air conditioning available in the bungalows as an additional charge, as well as a fan, heating, wardrobe space, TV and free WiFi. The fridge is the useful detail on a hot Maltese day; the kettle does its job when the first drink of the morning needs to happen before conversation. All bungalows are non-smoking. Cots can be requested for young children, while extra beds are not available.

The Great Dane carries the main meal service, with breakfast, lunch and dinner in an à la carte restaurant open throughout the year. Its menu covers international and Maltese dishes, and the restaurant is also a meeting place for residents and local people. You can turn up in ordinary holiday clothes, but not in swimwear; Malta is relaxed, not quite that relaxed.

For lighter eating, The pool bar serves lunch, snacks, cold drinks and homemade food from its poolside terrace. Joseph's Bar also works by the pool, with refreshments, snacks and entertainment, while Hansen Gastro Bar handles burgers, salads and pizzas at lunch and dinner. That gives you a choice between sitting down properly and eating something that can be managed without a long post-dive debate.

The food offer includes traditional Maltese dishes, fresh Maltese bread, fresh vegetables, steaks, homemade smoothies, sandwiches and a self-service salad buffet. Food can be delivered to the holiday homes, and the on-site supermarket covers the basics, including meat available through a local butcher. Barbecue areas are available for guests who would rather make their own evening meal, and the supermarket can arrange daily delivery at 08:00.

Four pools give you several ways to spend a non-diving afternoon. The main outdoor pool measures 25 by 13 metres and has a small slide; two further outdoor pools are designed for children, one smaller and one with water fountains. The indoor pool is heated in winter and connects with the spa and wellness area. In summer, the indoor pool and spa area are reserved for adults aged 15 and over, which gives couples a quieter place to recover when the outdoor pool is doing family business.

Thyme4me Spa offers massages, facial treatments, body scrubs, aromatherapy and Swedish full-body treatments, along with manicures, pedicures and waxing. The same indoor wellness area includes a sauna, hot tub, relaxation space and fitness centre. The gym has treadmills, an exercise bike, cross-trainer, rowing machine, weights, bar and exercise balls, so you can choose between sensible recovery and the sort of plan that begins with good intentions.

Away from the water, you can play tennis, mini-golf, pétanque, darts, table tennis, football or on the multi-sports court, with badminton, volleyball, basketball, handball and hockey available there. Cycling and walking routes take you beyond the resort, while organised excursions can take you to Mdina, Valletta, Gozo, the Ggantija Temples, the Azure Window area or Victoria's Citadel. Snorkelling, sailing, harbour tours and boat trips are also available around Malta, with the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon used for snorkelling excursions.

You reach the resort by road, and free parking is available on site without reservation. Car hire can be arranged through reception, which is useful if your plan includes Valletta, Mdina, Gozo or the more distant beaches rather than only the bay outside the gate. A supermarket on site, an ATM, luggage storage, lockers and a tour desk keep the basic logistics close at hand.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 22:00, with check-out from 07:00 to 10:00. Reception opens from 08:00 to 18:30 from Sunday to Friday and from 07:30 to 18:30 on Saturdays; a night service operates outside those hours. WiFi is free throughout the resort, and laundry is available. All bungalows are non-smoking, and pets are not allowed.

The electrical supply is 240V with rectangular three-pin sockets, apart from one two-pin socket in the lounge. The resort is fully accessible for guests with additional needs, and adapted bungalows are available. Children of all ages are welcome; cots can be arranged for children aged up to two, subject to the accommodation option. The outdoor pool operates from 08:00 to 18:30 in summer and from 08:00 to 16:30 in winter.

The resort sits within a Natura 2000 protected area and close to a bird reserve, so the surrounding landscape is not just a convenient backdrop. Its environmental work is recognised through Travelife certification, with the resort using guest and staff education as part of its approach to protecting the local habitat.

Drinking water is produced through reverse-osmosis desalination, using seawater drawn from a deep coastal well. The water is remineralised for taste and pH, treated with a small amount of chlorine for safety, and tested regularly by an independent accredited laboratory. The resort's decisions are made with the balance of the surrounding habitat in mind, and an annual sustainability report is available.
