Buzos de Baru

Located in the Bocagrande area of Cartagena, Buzos de Barú has been a fixture of the Colombian Caribbean diving scene for more than 25 years. As a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort, they have established a reputation for navigating the diverse ecosystems of the region, from shallow reef flats to deeper wreck sites.

The diving here is defined by the proximity to the Rosario Islands and the Barú reefs, which are protected by coral barriers that allow for year-round diving. Whether you are looking to explore the 'underwater jungle' or investigate historical shipwrecks, the centre focuses on finding the best conditions for every outing.

The centre operates with a professional team of PADI instructors, maintaining a guide ratio of one instructor for every four divers. This ensures a high level of supervision and personalised attention during both recreational dives and training programmes.

Safety is integrated into their core operations, with a commitment to using new, disinfected, and well-maintained equipment. They adhere to high international safety standards, providing essential support such as on-board oxygen and GPS systems for all excursions.

Buzos de Barú offers a comprehensive range of PADI certifications. For those new to the water, they provide Minicurso and Scuba Diver to Open Water Diver pathways. They also facilitate the Curso Referido for divers looking to continue their training with a different provider.

For more experienced divers, the centre runs Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and various PADI Specialty courses. They also provide EFR (Emergency First Response) and First Aid training to ensure a solid foundation in dive safety.

The fleet includes two primary vessels. The Buzos de Barú is a modern lancha built in 2024, powered by twin 200 HP engines and capable of carrying 26 divers. It is well-equipped for comfort, featuring freshwater showers and space for snacks and tropical fruits during the trip.

The second boat, La Buza, is a 25-foot lancha powered by twin 90 HP engines. This vessel is suited for smaller groups, with a capacity for 10 passengers, providing a more intimate experience on the water.

The centre provides full equipment hire for divers who prefer not to carry their own kit. This includes everything required for a complete dive, from regulators to wetsuits. For those planning night dives, torches are provided as part of the service.

On-shore, the facility is set up for convenience with freshwater rinsing and cleaning protocols for all gear. Safety equipment, including oxygen, is readily available on-site and on the boats.

The reefs are teeming with life, particularly within the coral formations that protect the area. You will encounter a wide variety of fish, crustaceans, and molluscs throughout the day. Octopus are frequently spotted among the reef structures.

The macro life is diverse, with various crustaceans and molluscs providing plenty of interest for those who enjoy searching the smaller crevices of the reef. The biodiversity is a key feature of the protected Rosario Islands area.

In the larger open areas, you may encounter more mobile species. The ecosystem supports a healthy population of various fish species that move through the coral thickets and around the various wreck sites.

The diving environment is generally stable due to the protective coral barriers of the Barú reefs and the Salmedina lighthouse area. These barriers help mitigate wave action, allowing for consistent diving throughout the year.

Water temperatures remain warm, typically staying between 28°C and 30°C. Visibility is variable depending on the specific site and conditions, generally measured between 7m and 20m.
