Mergullo Compostela

Mergullo Compostela serves the rugged and rewarding coastline of Galicia, operating out of Porto do Son. While the centre is rooted in Santiago de Compostela, its heart is on the water, where the Atlantic's history is written in the remains of sunken vessels and aircraft.

The centre is an SSI (Scuba Schools International) affiliated school, providing a structured pathway from initial training through to professional levels. Instruction is led by Marcelino, who manages the educational programmes and provides guidance for those looking to progress through the ranks.

Their pedagogical approach emphasises real-world experience, moving students into the sea as early as the first day of their training. This ensures that even those who feel less confident in the water become accustomed to actual maritime conditions and buoyancy control in a controlled, professional manner.

The training catalogue is comprehensive, covering the full SSI spectrum. Beginners can start with the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to expand their skills can pursue the Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep, or Wreck specialties.

For divers aiming for professional status, the centre offers paths toward Dive Control Specialist and Master Diver. They also provide essential safety and rescue training, including Stress & Rescue and React Right, alongside specialised courses in night diving and underwater orientation. A dedicated course for introductory underwater fishing is also available.

The centre operates a 14-metre dive boat specifically designed for coastal excursions. The vessel provides a stable platform for accessing the various wreck sites and reefs scattered throughout the region.

Nitrox is available on board, allowing divers to extend their bottom times on deeper sites. The boat facilitates regular weekend sorties and is equipped to handle night dives, making it a versatile asset for both recreational and technical divers.

Full rental kit is available on-site for divers who do not wish to carry their own equipment. This includes everything required for a complete dive, from BCDs and regulators to wetsuits and fins.

For those looking to maintain their own gear, the centre provides regulator servicing and cylinder hydrostatic testing. They also offer Nitrox cylinder refills and standard air fills to ensure you are ready before heading to the pier.

The Galician waters are best experienced during the autumn, when the water is clear and temperatures remain pleasant. In the winter, visibility is often at its peak, though conditions can be more demanding.

Divers should note that the summer months can bring colder water into the rias. The centre organises departures every weekend of the year, providing access to sites suited to various experience levels and environmental conditions.
