The mood is polished rather than informal, with landscaped gardens, canals and views towards Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Couples have rooms and suites suited to a two-person stay, while families can move up to larger suites and villas with more room to spread out. This is a full-service resort, not a small dive lodge with a swimming pool attached. That distinction matters when you are deciding whether the evening should involve dinner, a massage or simply a very cold drink in an air-conditioned room.

You are in Abu Dhabi, at Khor Al Maqta'a near the Maqta Conservation Area, on the historic route between Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland. The resort sits directly beside the water, with a private sandy beachfront, canals, gardens and views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The setting is waterfront rather than urban-centre, although business and government districts are close by.

The mosque is a five-minute walk away, which gives you one of Abu Dhabi's most recognisable sights almost on the doorstep. Al Maqtaa Fort is about 2.5 miles away, Sheikh Khalifa Park about 4 miles away and Eastern Mangroves Promenade about 4 miles away. Yas Island is around a 20-minute drive, so the resort can also work if your non-diving companions want the island's attractions without staying there.

Zayed International Airport is about 15 miles away, with a driving time of roughly 13 minutes. Dubai International Airport is much farther away, at around 94 miles.

Every room opens towards the landscaped gardens, with views over the pool, gardens or Grand Canal. That gives you something more substantial than a corridor-facing box when you return sun-flushed and ready to collapse. Air conditioning, a minibar, a Nespresso machine, satellite television and ironing facilities cover the useful basics, while the private bathrooms include a bath or shower, bathrobes, slippers and toiletries.

For a couple, a king room or the Venetian Room keeps things straightforward, while twin rooms make sense when you are travelling with a friend and prefer separate beds. The larger suites add living space, and the Garden Suite includes a sofa bed, making it more flexible for a small family. The villas are the serious space option: the Garden House and two-bedroom plunge pool villa accommodate larger groups, while the three-bedroom villa adds a garden and plunge pool. Some villas also have a terrace and a living room with a dining area.

Club rooms and suites come with lounge access, which changes the way you use the resort if you prefer a quieter place for drinks and daily culinary presentations. Eight dining venues give you more choice than most people manage in a week. Giornotte covers breakfast, lunch and dinner with light Mediterranean cooking and an outdoor patio over the gardens. Mijana brings Middle Eastern food to an open-air terrace, with tea, shisha and live music in the evening. Li Jiang handles Asian dishes with a modern approach, an open kitchen and views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, while The Forge is the indoor, air-conditioned steakhouse for premium cuts and wine.

Dolce is the practical daytime option, with balanced food, wellness drinks, keto and vegan choices, plus poke bowls. The Pool Bar by Dolce serves light food and drinks beside the pool and beach. Sorso Bar is the evening lobby bar for cocktails, wine, beer and mocktails, while Alba Lobby Lounge works for coffee, light fare and Afternoon Tea. Smart casual is the dress code at the signature restaurants; Giornotte, Dolce, the pool venues and Alba are more relaxed.

Breakfast is available à la carte, with continental and buffet service also offered. The room-service menu is available 24 hours a day, and the resort has late dining as well as daytime snacks. Happy Hour runs at Al Fresco from 15:00 to 17:00, while the venues also run themed evenings such as Pizza and Pasta Night, Sushi and Sake Night, Lobster Night and Seafood Night. A vertical farm on site supplies fresh produce daily, and vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and keto choices are available.

The main outdoor pool is a substantial saltwater-chlorinated pool, open from 07:00 to 21:00, with sun loungers, umbrellas and pool towels available. The children's pool has a lifeguard, while the adults-only pool is temporarily closed. Alongside the pools, the private beachfront gives you a place to sit beside the canal, with loungers, parasols, showers, a beach bar and a beach pavilion.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa and Salon is beachfront, offering massages, facials and beauty treatments, with a steam room, Hammam, relaxation area and treatment rooms. The Wellness Centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and includes cardiovascular and strength equipment, locker rooms, sauna rooms, steam rooms, fitness classes and personal trainers on request. If your legs still want work after a dive, there are five padel courts, a floodlit FIFA-standard football pitch and jogging tracks.

There is plenty for travelling families, including the Ritz Kids programme for children aged 4 to 12, with supervised indoor and outdoor activities, arts and crafts, playtime and Abu Dhabi-themed cultural activities. For a more grown-up day away from the water, the concierge can arrange visits to places such as Qasr Al Watan, Qasr Al Hosn, the Louvre Museum, Heritage Village and the National Aquarium, as well as desert safaris. Golf is also available as an activity.

Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out is by 12:00. The resort holds Green Key certification and has built several environmental measures into day-to-day operations. Its Glass Bottle Project re-bottles water on site and saves around 850,000 plastic bottles each year, while refill stations and reusable glass bottles support in-house desalination and water production. Bathroom amenities use a refillable system rather than individual disposable containers.

The on-site vertical farm supplies pesticide-free produce daily, and a food-waste digester processes food waste using microorganisms. Thermodynamic solar heating supports the hot-water system, while the main pool uses saltwater chlorination. The resort also runs beach clean-ups and sustainable event planning with locally sourced menus, portion planning, surplus-food donation and post-event reporting.

Other measures include washable gloves intended to save 1.4 million pairs each year, recyclable service gloves and a campaign to remove Styrofoam from operations. You can also take part in vertical garden experiences on the property, which is a more hands-on approach than simply putting a green card in the bathroom.
