Ajman Saray is a beachfront resort for divers who want the sea close at hand but also appreciate having somewhere properly comfortable to retreat to. You have a private sandy beach, balconies on every room, several places to eat and drink, and a spa designed around rest rather than the heroic pursuit of yet another activity.

The scale is substantial, with 205 rooms and suites, but the useful point is what that gives you at the end of the day: space to sit, a proper choice of restaurants, and enough room to disappear for a while. English is one of the hotel's website languages, alongside French, German, Italian, Spanish and several others; that tells you the resort is set up for an international clientele, although no hotel staff languages are listed here.

This is a good fit if your ideal post-dive plan involves a shower, a balcony, a drink by the beach and somebody else dealing with dinner. If you are looking for a small hideaway with a single restaurant and a hammock, you are looking at the wrong sort of animal.

You are in Ajman, United Arab Emirates, on Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Street, directly on the coast. The resort has its own sandy beach with sun loungers and parasols, so getting to the water is a matter of walking out rather than organising transport. Ajman Beach is around 0.8 miles away if you want to see another stretch of sand.

The setting is urban-coastal rather than remote. Ajman Museum is about 0.8 miles away on foot, while the Museum of Islamic Civilization and Sharjah Heritage Museum are each around 5 miles away by road. The immediate area also includes places such as Sea View Restaurant, around 350 feet away, and Rodeo Bar, around 450 feet away.

Airport access is straightforward by car. Sharjah International Airport is around 11 miles away by road, and Dubai International Airport around 13 miles; Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is much farther, at about 43 miles.

The practical choice starts with the view. Sea-view rooms give you the Arabian Gulf from your balcony, while creek-view rooms turn the outlook inland; both offer a place to sit outside once you have stopped dripping on the bathroom floor. King and twin arrangements cover couples and friends travelling together, and the larger suites add a living room with a dining table when you want proper separation between sleeping and sitting.

For two divers, a standard room should cover the essentials without asking you to live out of the suitcase. For a longer stay, or for three or four people sharing, the one-bedroom suites make more sense because the extra living space gives everyone somewhere to exist without forming a queue beside the bed. The Royal Suite has two bedrooms, two double beds and a balcony, which is the option for a group that values personal space more than keeping things compact.

Air conditioning matters in this part of the world, and the rooms have it. Soundproofing, soundproof rooms, a minibar and tea- and coffee-making facilities cover the less glamorous but more useful parts of the night: cooling down, keeping a drink cold and not having every corridor noise join the conversation. You also have a flat-screen TV, satellite and cable channels, an iPod dock, a radio, a sofa or seating area and a desk. Bathrooms include both a bath and a shower, along with bathrobes and slippers.

You are not tied to one dining room here. The resort has six restaurant and bar venues, with food ranging from seafood and Mediterranean cooking to Middle Eastern and Indian flavours, plus grills. Breakfast is continental or American, and lunch and dinner are served at the resort's restaurants, giving you room to vary the routine over a week rather than treating every evening as a repeat performance.

There is a beach bar for the obvious first drink after the sea, as well as a stylish lounge when you would rather sit properly and let the sand remain outside. A coffee house, bar, restaurant, minibar and in-room breakfast add further ways to deal with the awkward hours between a late return and a formal meal.

Special-diet menus are available on request, and packed lunches are available when the day's plans do not fit neatly around restaurant service. Room service is also available. The useful distinction is simple: this is a resort where you can stay in for dinner without accepting the culinary equivalent of a packed lunch.

Two heated outdoor pools give you an alternative to the sea when you want water without waves, while the sandy beach has loungers and parasols for the more traditional post-dive horizontal position. The garden, sun terrace and outdoor seating keep the choice open between shade, sun and the sensible middle ground.

Zihn SPA is the main recovery stop. It offers massages, body wraps, scrubs and body treatments, along with facials, beauty services, hair treatments, manicures and pedicures. There is also a spa lounge, steam room, foot bath and couples massage, so you can book something restorative rather than pretending that another full day of sightseeing is a form of relaxation.

A modern fitness centre, fitness classes and yoga are available if your legs still have opinions. You can also hire bicycles, play squash or arrange fishing; hiking and fishing are listed among activities away from the resort. Families have a kids' club, children's play areas and a children's pool, which makes the property workable for a mixed-age trip rather than a purely adult diving week.

Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. The front desk operates around the clock, with express check-in and check-out, concierge service, luggage storage, a tour desk and currency exchange. Car hire is available, and free private parking with valet service is provided on site; no reservation is needed for the parking.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and is free. Laundry and dry-cleaning services are available, while room service, packed lunches and breakfast in your room cover the days when dive logistics defeat your appetite for the dining room. A business centre, meeting facilities, lift access and wheelchair-accessible features are also available.

Children of any age are welcome, with cots available for younger children subject to the selected room arrangement. There are no extra beds. The minimum check-in age is 18, pets are not allowed, and every guest needs a physical, valid passport or identity document at check-in; digital copies and photographs are not accepted.
