Oneta Resort

Oneta Resort is a small eco-lodge on Ono Island, built in a Fijian style across a broad seaside property. This is the sort of place that suits you if you would rather trade roads, crowds and a long list of nearby attractions for gardens, hammocks and a private stretch of coast. The setting is deliberately remote, with jungle, reef and sea doing most of the talking.

You can spend the quiet parts of the day in a hammock with a book, take a cocktail to the beach, or settle into the shared lounge when the weather turns. The resort also works for families, with children aged eight and over welcome, while couples have the option of sea views, private beach access and massages beside the water. It is relaxed rather than polished into anonymity: a place built around the island and its pace.

The hotel sits directly on the coast of Ono Island, in Fiji. There are no roads on the island, and access is by boat, so this is not a base for wandering into town between dives. It is a self-contained seaside address, with its own beach, gardens and water activities close at hand.

The nearest listed airport is Vunisea Airport, about 25 miles away, while Nausori International Airport is about 57 miles away. The journey does not finish at the runway: the resort describes a flight from Nadi to Kadavu followed by a boat transfer to Ono. In practical terms, you arrive for the island itself, not for a convenient airport hotel with a reef somewhere down the road.

The accommodation ranges from beach-front bungalows to villas with sea views or a private pool. A beach-front bungalow is the straightforward choice if you want the shore immediately outside, while the sea-view villas give you more room to spread out and, in some cases, two bathrooms. The family room uses two super-king-size beds and suits a group that values sleeping space over separate bedrooms.

Inside, the mood is simple and island-minded: wooden or parquet flooring, a fan, wardrobe, seating area and mosquito netting around the bed. Each bungalow has an en-suite bathroom and a private outdoor hot-water shower, with a balcony, terrace or patio depending on the accommodation. The fan matters here; after salt water and tropical heat, moving air is not decorative furniture.

You also get a private entrance, outdoor furniture and a drying rack for clothing, useful when swimsuits have been through another full day of island life. Daily housekeeping, linen and towels are part of the practical side of the stay, while free Wi-Fi is available. Choose by the way you expect to use the room: beach access for easy sea time, a sea view for the evening, or the private-pool villa when the room itself needs to do more of the relaxing.

Full board keeps the day pleasantly simple: breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered, so you can return hungry without starting a logistical exercise. Breakfast is served as a continental, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and buffet selection, with breakfast to go also available. Packed lunches are useful when an excursion takes you away from the main table.

The restaurant combines Fijian cooking with Italian dishes, using vegetables, salads and fruit from the resort's garden and orchard wherever possible. That gives the meals a clear connection to the island rather than treating local produce as a garnish. Special-diet menus can be arranged, and children's meals and a child-friendly buffet are available.

There is one bar, alongside a coffee shop and snack bar, with beer, wine and spirits. For a more distinctly Fijian evening, Saturday brings a lovo dinner and kava ceremony. You can also take a beach picnic with grilled Fijian-style fish, known locally as tatavu. It is the sort of food plan that fits diving well: eat properly, drink something cold, then let the evening slow down.

The beach is the main piece of equipment, and it comes with sun loungers and hammocks. You can snorkel, kayak, paddleboard, sail or use an outrigger canoe without leaving the resort area. A Hobie Cat is also available. If your legs still have an opinion after a day in the water, darts, board games, books and the shared lounge offer less ambitious alternatives.

The Oneta Spa sits beside the water and focuses on massage, including head, neck, back, foot, hand and full-body treatments. Couples' massages are available, as are shorter or longer sessions, with Pure Fiji products and locally made coconut oil used in the treatments. The sea provides the soundtrack; no playlist required.

For a more active day, the resort arranges hikes to a Kadavu waterfall or Vatulutu, an uninhabited island, along with village visits, fishing trips, mangrove outings by kayak or paddleboard, and private-beach picnics. Birdwatching trips to Yabu Island are timed for sunset. Saturday evenings bring the lovo and kava ceremony, while live music, movie nights, walking tours and local-culture sessions give the evenings a little structure without turning them into a programme you must attend.

Getting there takes planning. The route described by the resort is a roughly 40-minute flight from Nadi to Kadavu, followed by about an hour by boat. The aircraft is small and flight availability can be limited, with schedules subject to change, so your flight details and expected arrival time need to be coordinated with the resort. A member of the Oneta team collects guests at the airport for the onward transfer.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out is by 09:00. The minimum age for check-in is 18, and children aged eight and over are welcome; cots are not available, while extra beds can be requested depending on the accommodation. Babysitting and child services are available. Pets are not allowed.

An airport shuttle is available, and private check-in and check-out, luggage storage, a tour desk, concierge service and a 24-hour front desk cover the practical edges of the stay. Cash, credit cards and bank transfers are accepted. The resort also has trained first-aid personnel and a defibrillator on site. Wi-Fi is free, and laundry is available as a service.

The hotel has been carbon neutral since 2022. Three solar-energy systems reduce the need for the diesel generator, while carbon offsets cover the boat engines as the resort works towards electric outboards. Water comes from a natural hillside spring, and grey water is reused for watering plants.

The practical work continues in the kitchen and gardens. Food scraps are composted, three Homebiogas systems turn kitchen waste into renewable cooking gas and liquid organic fertiliser, and the garden supplies much of the fresh produce. Plastics are kept to a minimum, with no plastic water bottles or straws, while paper, glass, tins and plastics are sorted for recycling.

Biodgradable cleaning and laundry products, sun-dried linen, regular beach clean-ups and reef-friendly sunscreen are part of the routine. Small diving and snorkelling groups limit pressure on the reef, and sport fishing favours returning fish to the water. The resort also supports local villages and schools through the Oneta Foundation, with a giant-clam nursery adding a marine-conservation project to the wider island operation.
