Ocean Ventures Fiji

Ocean Ventures Fiji is situated on the island of Vanua Levu, the second largest in the Fijian archipelago. The centre sits on the south-eastern coast of Natewa Bay, a massive, deep-water expanse covering over 1000 square kilometres. This bay is significantly more protected than the open ocean, offering a sanctuary of calm waters and sheltered coastlines.

Established in 2017, the centre provides access to an immense underwater landscape of pristine reefs. Because the bay reaches depths of 500 metres, the surrounding reef systems are remarkably healthy and well-protected from the heavy swells of the open Pacific.

The operation is led by Matthew Norman, a PADI Master Instructor with over two decades of diving experience and 14 years of professional instruction. He is joined by co-owner Sara Carlson, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer who brings a specific expertise in reef ecology to the team.

Safety and local knowledge are central to the service, supported by Captain Sevanaia Bati, whose familiarity with the Natewa Bay waters is essential for navigating the local reefs. The team focuses on small groups and environmental education, ensuring that every dive contributes to a deeper understanding of the marine ecosystem.

Ocean Ventures Fiji is a PADI affiliated centre offering a comprehensive range of training programmes. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving and the Open Water Diver course, progressing through Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver certifications.

For those looking to specialise, the centre offers several PADI specialties including Deep Diver, Night Diver, Underwater Navigator, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. They also provide advanced training such as Divemaster and specialized ecological courses like the South Pacific Coral Reef Ecology Diver, Project AWARE Specialist, and AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialist. Digital Underwater Photographer courses are also available for those looking to document their dives.

The centre operates a custom-built dive boat specifically outfitted for local expeditions. It features dedicated tank racks, a diver's ladder for easy egress, and a sun-canopy to provide shade during transit.

The vessel is used for various trip types, including day dives and night dives. Its design allows for efficient movement between the various reef systems within the bay while maintaining a comfortable environment for divers.

For those travelling light, the centre provides rental kit including regulators and BCDs, as well as wetsuits, masks, and fins. Weights and cylinders are also available for hire.

Safety is prioritised on-site with the availability of emergency oxygen services. The centre is set up to handle both cash and card payments for all services and kit rentals.

The reefs of Natewa Bay are defined by a vibrant architecture of hard and soft corals. These structures support a healthy population of reef fish, including snapper, trevally, and mackerels, alongside larger residents like the Great barracuda and reef sharks.

In the open water and around the reef edges, you can encounter rays and turtles. The area is also home to two resident groups of spinner dolphins, and while not guaranteed, whales are occasionally observed in these waters.

Macro life and smaller species add significant detail to the dive experience. Look out for sea urchins (often referred to as Christmas tree worms) and various reef fish tucked into the coral. The presence of plankton blooms can often draw larger pelagic species to the area.

Natewa Bay is a highly sheltered environment, which keeps the swell significantly lower than in the open ocean. This protection results in generally calm water conditions, making it an ideal location for both reef explorations and night diving.

Water currents are typically weak due to the bay's protected nature. For the best underwater visibility, plan your visit between July and December, when the water clarity is at its peak.
