Salt Diver Taveuni

Located in Matei on the island of Taveuni, Salt Diver provides access to some of the most renowned diving in the South Pacific. The centre is positioned to take you directly into the heart of the Somosomo Strait, a region celebrated globally for its incredible density of soft corals.

This is a family-run operation led by the Levin family, who have been working in these waters since 1992. Their long-standing presence in Fiji means they have a deep understanding of the local currents and the seasonal shifts that dictate the best diving conditions.

The centre is built on a foundation of family values and long-term ocean stewardship. They actively support marine conservation by donating 5% of their profits to local groups dedicated to teaching young people about ocean preservation.

As a PADI affiliated centre, they offer structured training and guided exploration for various skill levels. The team’s decades of experience in the Taveuni area ensure that the focus remains on safe, environmentally conscious diving.

The reefs around Taveuni are a kaleidoscope of colour, driven by an immense variety of hard and soft corals. With over 400 varieties of coral present, the structure of the reef provides a complex habitat for an incredible array of marine life, including more than 2,300 species of fish.

You will regularly encounter sea turtles and reef sharks patrolling the reef edges. Larger pelagics are part of the local ecosystem, and you may see Spanish mackerel or Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) moving through the water.

For those interested in smaller subjects, the area is a haven for macro life. Nudibranchs are frequently found amongst the corals, adding intricate detail to your underwater photography or observation.

Depending on the time of year, you may also have the opportunity to encounter Manta rays or Humpback whales.

The diving in this region is characterised by strong tidal currents. These currents are a vital part of the ecosystem, as they bring a constant supply of nutrients to the reef, supporting the massive growth of soft corals.

Because of these nutrient-rich flows, drift diving is the preferred method for exploring the sites around Taveuni. You should be prepared to manage your buoyancy and positioning in moving water to make the most of the visibility and marine life.
