Taveuni Ocean Sports

Located in the heart of Fiji, Taveuni Ocean Sports operates out of the Nakia Resort & Dive in Savusavu. The centre is deeply integrated into the local marine ecosystem, participating in Reefcheck research and supporting the PADI Project Aware foundation.

You will find yourself exploring the renowned Rainbow Reef, an area defined by unique upwelling processes within the Somosomo Strait. This nutrient-rich environment creates a highly productive marine landscape that supports a vast array of life.

The team at Taveuni Ocean Sports brings over 25 years of family-run experience to the Taveuni waters. They maintain a strong focus on marine conservation through active research and community involvement.

Instruction is conducted with a high level of personal attention, maintaining a ratio of no more than four divers per instructor during training. For recreational excursions, the centre keeps groups small, with a maximum of six clients per boat trip.

The centre offers a full range of PADI training, starting with introductory dive courses for those new to the water. For those looking to progress professionally, they provide the PADI Divemaster course.

All instruction is conducted by qualified PADI professionals, ensuring a structured path from your first breath underwater to advanced professional levels.

The fleet consists of three custom aluminium vessels designed for reliable operation. The 12-metre Super Fish is the largest in the fleet and is the only boat equipped with a toilet.

You can also dive aboard the 9-metre aluminium catamaran, Upwelling, or the 8-metre aluminium boat, Ika Lailai. On your excursions, you can expect fresh tropical fruits from the garden, freshly pressed juices, tea, and baked treats on board, alongside hot showers available after your dives.

The reefs here are teeming with life, ranging from large pelagics to delicate macro species. You will frequently encounter tuna, barracuda, and Spanish mackerel moving through the water column, alongside whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus).

On the reef structure, you can observe Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) and various species of coral and fish. The vibrant ecosystem is a key reason why the area remains so productive.

For those interested in macro life, the area is home to several nudibranchs and the leaf scorpionfish. You may also spot blue ribbon eels or smaller creatures tucked into the reef structure.

The diving in this area is shaped by dynamic currents caused by the Somosomo Strait acting as a funnel during tidal changes. These currents are highly nutritious, bringing significant amounts of plankton to the reef.

These nutrient-rich, moving waters are what sustain the high density of marine life found throughout the Rainbow Reef.
