Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport BZE
At Belize City, the airport fits into one building and you can walk across it in a few minutes; the real question is what you will do with the hours left in a terminal where almost everything beyond the wifi costs money.
How long is your layover?
2 hrs
It should work, but no official minimum is published, so do not plan it to the minute.
- Terminals T1 and T2 are in the same building and linked by a common hall. Allow a few minutes on foot; no shuttle is needed.
- The airport operator recommends arriving 3 to 4 hours before a departing flight for check-in. That is a useful guide for a connection too, since no official minimum is published for transit alone.
- There is no dedicated international transit area. For an international-to-international connection, allow for the usual security screening.
2–5 hrs
The terminal offers little, but the little it offers is free: wifi, sockets and toilets.
- Wifi is free throughout the terminal, including the departure lounge, with no paid registration.
- Toilets and baby-changing facilities are free and available throughout the airport building.
- Charging points are available in the departure lounge, subject to sockets being free.
- Restaurants, shops and duty-free are paid facilities with no special access condition. A bank and cash machines are in the terminal.
5–10 hrs
You can leave without a visa, but no organised tour will be waiting for you.
- VISA REQUIRED leaving the secure area means entering Belize as an ordinary tourist; no international transit status removes that requirement.
- NO VISA French, German, Italian, Spanish, British and Portuguese passport holders can enter for up to 30 days with a valid passport, a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds.
- The airport organises no official city tours. Private transfers and excursions to Belize City and San Ignacio exist and must be booked with agencies; they are paid services.
10 hrs +
There is no airside hotel; spend the night in Ladyville and take a taxi.
- VISA REQUIRED you need to enter Belize to reach a hotel, as BZE has no airside accommodation.
- The nearest properties are in Ladyville or along the road towards Belize City, several kilometres away. Use a taxi or hotel shuttle, not your feet.
- No standard accommodation programme from an airline is available for a long layover at BZE.
What catches travellers out
Leaving the terminal means entering Belize
BZE has no international transit status. Leaving the secure area, even for a few hours, means passing immigration like any other tourist.
No official minimum connection time is published
Neither the airport operator nor the airlines publish a minimum for an international-to-international aircraft change. A figure shown by a flight comparison site binds nobody at the airport.
Why not wait it out in peace?
BZE has one lounge, and you can buy access at the door without a card or status.
The Global Lounge is in Terminal 2, airside in the departures area. You pay per visit; your same-day ticket and payment at the entrance are enough, with no loyalty card required.
You can also enter with Priority Pass or DragonPass, subject to the rules attached to your card.
It is the only alternative to the shared departure lounge: BZE has no other lounge open to the general public. Concierge services such as meet and greet can provide lounge access, but only as part of their full service.
For a few quiet hours, think in terms of the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal.
Where to sleep during the layover?
A few kilometres from the terminal by taxi or hotel shuttle; there is no airside accommodation.
- You cannot walk the distance. Use a taxi or the hotel shuttle if your booking includes one.
- Some properties offer a free or paid shuttle for guests. Check when you book, not when you arrive.
The diver’s reflex
Your torch and housing batteries belong in the cabin
Belize Civil Aviation follows the IATA standard: each person may carry up to 15 lithium-battery devices and 20 spare batteries, with spares exclusively in the cabin and protected against short circuits. Any device placed in the hold must be completely switched off, never left on standby.
Ambergris Caye and Turneffe require a second flight
San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and flights to the atolls are reached by domestic flight with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, not by road. With no official minimum connection time published at BZE, leave a generous gap between the two flights rather than trusting a figure found online.
