Since 2023, Abu Dhabi has operated from one new terminal: no shuttle, no change of building. There is one catch: your minimum connection time depends on whether you remain with Etihad.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
There is one terminal and everything is walkable, but the number that matters depends on your ticket.
- Everything happens airside in Terminal A, with no shuttle or building change: your gate is along a corridor, not beyond the runway.
- ⚠️ There is no single minimum connection time. Allow 90 minutes from international to international, and 120 minutes when your flights are on different airlines. Etihad has reduced its own minimum to 45 minutes between its flights, except to the United States, but that figure applies only with Etihad.
- On a standard international transfer, with your bags tagged through to your final destination, you do not pass through immigration.

2–5 hrs
You have time to eat, freshen up and recharge. The terminal is new and properly equipped.
- Wi-Fi is free for every passenger on the airport network.
- Showers are marked with pictograms in the middle of the terminal, near the shops, including two larger cubicles. ⚠️ Nothing is hired out: bring your towel and toiletries, or use the lounge.
- Water fountains sit near the toilets after security. Fill your bottle rather than buying water for eight hours.
- The left-luggage facility is landside by arrivals, open at all times, and chargeable. It is useful only if you leave the airport.
5–10 hrs
Leaving is straightforward, but nothing has been laid on for you once you are outside.
- NO VISA the terminal will cover half a day: showers, water fountains, Wi-Fi and the lounge if you want some quiet.
- VISA REQUIRED most European passport holders can enter the United Arab Emirates for a short stay without applying in advance. Check your own passport: other nationalities need a transit visa arranged beforehand through an airline based in the United Arab Emirates.
- ⚠️ The airport offers no free city tour, unlike Doha or Istanbul. Private agencies sell tours after immigration, and you need at least seven hours of layover for a four-hour tour to fit.
10 hrs +
Sleep. The airside bed is inside the terminal and can be booked by the hour.
- NO VISA the transit hotel is inside Terminal A, in the international area: rooms have private bathrooms and can be booked in blocks of a few hours or overnight, without passing through immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED hotels around the airport are a few minutes away by shuttle or a short ride. ⚠️ Since Terminal A opened, the walkways linking the old terminals are no longer in use: assume you will need a vehicle.
- ⚠️ Do not expect a free night from the airline. There is no free-hotel programme for an ordinary long layover; accommodation is provided only after a delay or missed connection caused by the airline.

What catches travellers out
Anything you read about Terminals 1 and 3 is out of date
Abu Dhabi's old terminals have been closed since late 2023, with all operations moved to Terminal A. A fair number of online guides still describe the old airport, its shuttles and hotels linked on foot. Trust your boarding pass, not an article.
Your minimum connection depends on your ticket
45 minutes between two Etihad flights, 90 minutes from international to international, 120 minutes between two different airlines. Three figures for one airport: use the one that applies to you, not the most flattering one.
There is no free city tour here
Doha and Istanbul offer one, which can make it look like standard Gulf practice. Not here: excursions from Abu Dhabi are sold by private agencies, with their own terms and charges.
Why not wait it out in peace?

You can buy access to the Pearl Lounge without a card or status, and its ten shower cubicles matter when the terminal is busy.
First, clear up a common misconception: a lounge is not reserved for business-class passengers. Any passenger can buy access here, whatever airline or cabin class is on the ticket.
The alternative deserves honesty. The terminal has public showers, marked with pictograms near the shops. They will do the job, but you must bring your own towel and toiletries, nothing is hired out, and you share them with everyone else.
What the lounge really buys you here is an escape from queues: ten cubicles, a proper chair, buffet and drinks included, and quiet in a terminal that has rather little of it.
For a diver, there is another advantage: a socket to recharge torches and camera housings, plus somewhere to put fifteen kilos of cabin baggage.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for three to five hours of quiet, including a shower.

Sleep in the terminal without entering the United Arab Emirates, by the hour or overnight.
- Short stays are booked in blocks of a few hours, so a seven-hour layover does not mean paying for a full night.
- You remain airside throughout: no immigration, no baggage reclaim and no fresh check-in when you wake up.

- Allow for a shuttle or a short ride: since Terminal A opened, no hotel is connected to the terminal on foot.
- Consider this only if your passport allows entry to the United Arab Emirates and your layover can absorb two trips through immigration with your kit.

The diver’s reflex
Two lithium batteries not twenty, two
The local airline publishes a limit far tighter than normal practice, and few travellers know it: ONLY TWO lithium batteries below 100 Wh may be carried. Elsewhere, twenty or so batteries can pass without anyone counting. Two torch packs, a strobe battery and a spare for the housing make four. Between 100 Wh and 160 Wh, you need prior approval. If the marking has worn away or is missing common with old re-wrapped packs the battery is not accepted on board: without readable watt-hours, there is no discussion at the desk.
A 45-minute connection is not for you
The 45-minute minimum between two Etihad flights is a system figure: it assumes your bags are tagged through and you have nothing to collect. With dive luggage, especially when your flights are on separate tickets, treat 90 minutes as your floor and 120 minutes if the second airline is not the first.
A speargun needs approval from every country you TRANSIT
If you spearfish, this applies to you, and it is a transit rule rather than a destination rule. A speargun or spear cannot travel in checked baggage or cabin baggage without authorisation, and you need permits for every country you visit AND every country you merely transit through at least seven days before departure. Abu Dhabi counts as one of them, even if you never pass through immigration. Seven days cannot be recovered at the check-in desk.
