Nadi International Airport NAN

At Nadi, everything sits in one building and your connection to the islands is on foot. It is probably the Pacific’s least complicated hub. In return, it offers very little: no shower, and Wi-Fi that expires after 2 hours or 1 GB.

How long is your layover?

2 hrs

Everything is under one roof. This is the simplest connection in the whole series.

  • International and domestic areas sit beside each other in the same complex. You walk to your island flight in a few minutes, with no shuttle involved.
  • ⚠️ There is one security checkpoint for the departure area, and EVERYONE uses it, including connecting passengers. There is no transit corridor around it.
  • No minimum connection time is published. Airlines advise that you are checked in at least 90 min before an international departure; use that as your working baseline.

2–5 hrs

The terminal is new but bare. Plan ahead; there is nothing much to improvise.

  • ⚠️ Wi-Fi is free but ends after 2 HOURS or 1 GB, whichever comes first. Beyond that, you must buy a code in departures. Send what needs sending when you arrive.
  • ⚠️ There is no public shower and no fitted-out rest area. The post-security waiting area is spacious. That is the extent of it.
  • A water fountain stands by the toilets near gate 4. Fill your bottle rather than buying another one.
  • ⚠️ Left luggage is landside, by domestic arrivals, requires payment, and closes in the evening. It only helps if you are going back through the public side.

5–10 hrs

Getting out is easy here. It is one of the few hubs without advance entry formalities.

  • VISA REQUIRED Fiji grants visa-free entry to holders of the main European passports for a tourist stay of several months. Unlike neighbouring Australia and New Zealand, there is no online authorisation to arrange in advance.
  • ⚠️ The usual conditions still apply: a passport valid for 6 months, an onward ticket, and PROOF OF ACCOMMODATION. Pay attention to that last point if you join a liveaboard the following day rather than sleep in a hotel.
  • NO VISA if you remain airside, there is neither a shower nor a quiet room. Beyond four or five hours, the lounge becomes the obvious answer.
  • The airport runs no city tour. Day trips to nearby islands exist, but they are private, require payment, and must be booked in advance.

10 hrs +

You sleep nearby. The choice is simple, but it exists, and entry is straightforward.

  • VISA REQUIRED several hotels sit a few minutes from the terminal, from conventional airport stays to resort-style options. With no advance entry formalities for Fiji, this is one of the easier overnight stopovers in the series to arrange.
  • ⚠️ One property presents itself as a transit hotel, but travellers rate it very poorly. Look elsewhere: a few minutes away, the alternatives are markedly better for a modest difference in cost.
  • Confirm the transfer when you book, particularly if your island flight leaves at dawn.
  • No airline-funded overnight programme is documented.

What catches travellers out

Free Wi-Fi stops after 2 hours

2 hours or 1 GB, whichever comes first. It is one of the shortest allowances in this series, and it usually runs out halfway through an overnight stop. Beyond that, you must buy a code.

No shower, and left luggage closes in the evening

There is no public shower at Nadi, and left luggage is landside with limited opening hours. On an overnight stop, you keep everything with you and arrive on the island much as you left the aircraft.

Everyone goes through security again, including connections

There is one checkpoint and no transit corridor around it. Simple enough, but liquids bought elsewhere and poorly packed batteries will come out of your bag here as well.

Why not wait it out in peace?

The Fiji Airways Premier Lounge can be bought as a single visit, and it is about the only proper comfort available at this airport.

Clear up one misconception first: despite the name, this lounge is not limited to passengers of one airline. You can buy a single visit without status, whatever cabin is printed on your ticket.

The terminal itself is bare: no public shower, no proper rest area, and Wi-Fi that stops after 2 hours or 1 GB.

For an overnight stop before Taveuni or Savusavu, the case is straightforward: it is the only place where you can sit properly and have a socket to yourself for charging torches and camera housing.

There is a free water fountain by the toilets near gate 4. It is not a lounge, obviously, but it saves buying bottles during a six-hour wait.

Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for a few quiet hours.

Where to sleep during the layover?

VISA REQUIREDTanoa International Hotel

The dependable option in this area, a few minutes from the terminal.

  • This is Nadi’s familiar stopover address, used to late-night arrivals and very early departures.
  • As entry to Fiji requires no advance formalities, you can decide on a night here even quite late.

VISA REQUIREDTokatoka Resort Hotel

Opposite the airport, with a proper garden. More pleasant than an airport hotel.

  • Useful when your stopover runs beyond the night and you would rather wait beside a pool than in a terminal hall.
  • Check the transfer: at Nadi it is often included, but not always continuous.

The diver’s reflex

You will be asked where you are sleeping even if you are joining a boat

Entry to Fiji is visa-free, but you still need an onward ticket and PROOF OF ACCOMMODATION. If you are joining a liveaboard the following morning, you may not have a hotel booking to show. Ask your boat or agent for a document confirming where you will spend the night before you leave. It is the sort of paper you only think to request when standing at the desk.

Two hours of Wi-Fi, then it stops

Your allowance is 2 hours OR 1 GB, whichever comes first. On an overnight stop before a Taveuni flight, that is not much and it is exactly when you may need to tell a dive centre about a delay. Send the message when you arrive, not when you need it; a paid code is available in departures if you are stuck.

You walk to the island connection, but the aircraft is small

The good news is that reaching your domestic flight to Taveuni, Savusavu or the Yasawa requires neither a shuttle nor immigration: everything is under one roof. The less good news is that these services use small aircraft, with an allowance that may bear little resemblance to your long-haul ticket. Check the allowance on the second flight ticket, and arrange any excess online rather than at the desk.
