Auckland gives you free showers and unlimited Wi-Fi. In return, it requires the one thing you cannot sort out at the airport: electronic travel authorisation before departure, even for transit.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Two terminals, ten minutes on foot but the airport says 60 min.
- You can walk between the international and domestic terminals in 10–15 min, or use the free shuttle between them.
- ⚠️ For an international-to-domestic transfer, the airport gives a clear figure: be there 60 min before scheduled departure. That is not walking time; it covers baggage and checks.
- The figures often repeated elsewhere 90 min between two international flights and 120 min between different airlines are not official.
- ⚠️ The airport names three causes of delay: security, customs and BIOSECURITY. The last matters more to you than the others when your kit has been wet.
- The same airport also recommends THREE HOURS for an international arrival followed by a domestic flight 60 min is the reporting deadline, not the time needed for the full process. Customs and biosecurity queues can reach two hours in poor cases, with any kit inspection added on top.

- Free showers are spread across both terminals: international after security and at arrivals; domestic before and after security.

- A non-denominational chapel is open to everyone as a quiet space. It is the terminal’s only genuinely silent corner, and few people think of it.

⚠️ New Zealand authorisation applies to transit, not merely to leaving the airport.
- ⚠️ Settle this first: visa-exempt European passports still need ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORISATION before travel, including for transit. Apply online before departure.
- ⚠️ Some nationalities have particular conditions. Check your own rather than assuming the list works the same way for everyone.
- Without it, a strict transit arrangement applies: remain in the transit area, do not enter New Zealand, and stay no longer than 24 hours.
- The airport runs no city tour. Leaving means authorisation, then immigration, customs and biosecurity both on the way out and on the way back.

You sleep next door, and one hotel sits beside the international terminal.
- ⚠️ No airside hotel is documented at Auckland. You spend the night after immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED one hotel is adjacent to the international terminal, avoiding both shuttle and taxi. Several others are a few minutes away, most with a free transfer.
- Auckland is well supplied with nearby accommodation, at all hours and for all budgets.
- No airline-funded overnight programme is documented.
What catches travellers out
Electronic travel authorisation is required even in transit
Many people assume it is only for those entering the country. It is required for transit too, and you must arrange it before departure. It is the one point on this page that can stop you boarding.
Conditions are not identical for every European passport
New Zealand’s list is not uniform: some passports appear with conditions. Check yours precisely rather than relying on what applies to a travelling companion.
The shower does not come with a towel
The showers are free and well spread around the terminals, but towels and toiletries are sold beside them. A diver usually has a microfibre towel: keep it in your cabin bag rather than checked baggage.

You can book Strata online or enter at the door as any international passenger no card, status or airline requirement.
This is unusual, and worth stating plainly: the lounge is sold openly to the public, subject only to space being available and holding a valid international ticket.
Auckland’s other lounges those of the national airline, Emirates and Qantas depend on cabin class or status. They are much filmed, and they are not for you.
The alternative is perfectly honest: Auckland has FREE showers in several places, unlimited Wi-Fi, and even a chapel open to everyone for a quiet sit. For three hours, that is ample.
The lounge earns its keep on a long wait: a proper meal, a socket of your own for charging torches and camera housing, and somewhere to put the cabin bag before a night flight to the islands.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for three to four quiet hours.

- It is the shortest option by distance useful when the flight to the islands leaves early.
- You must clear immigration, customs and biosecurity, so your electronic travel authorisation needs to be approved.

The best-rated nearby option, a few minutes away with a transfer.
- Choose it when the stopover justifies a proper night rather than a few hours.
- Confirm the transfer timetable: it does not always run continuously overnight.

The diver’s reflex
⭐ The airport names biosecurity as a cause of delay and your bag is exactly what it concerns
Auckland explicitly lists biosecurity alongside security and customs among the checks that lengthen transfer times. That is precisely what a dive bag can trigger: a wetsuit, BCD, fins and boots that have been wet elsewhere are the sort of equipment watched closely in this part of the world. Arrive with them rinsed and DRY, and declare them. Declare the kit even if it needs treatment; failing to declare it is a poor gamble anywhere in the South Pacific.
Authorisation is for transit, not only entry
This is the trap. Elsewhere, staying airside may spare you any formalities. In New Zealand, electronic travel authorisation is required even when you are only changing aircraft. Apply online before departure; you cannot obtain it at the desk, and without it the airline can refuse boarding before you set off.
60 min is the airport’s figure not your comfort margin
For international to domestic, Auckland says 60 min before departure. That figure assumes an ordinary passenger. With a dive bag to collect, biosecurity taking an interest and a new check-in, allow double. This is the sort of margin you regret skipping only once.
