Table Top about the site

Table Top is an extended north-south ridge that presents a distinct dive profile for those seeking deeper exploration in Tofo. The descent brings you onto this broad structure, where the reef top is covered in an abundance of green tree corals. It’s here you’ll begin to appreciate the site’s unique topography, setting the stage for what lies beneath.

As you traverse the reef's summit, the vibrant green tree corals teem with life. Schools of redtooth triggerfish (Odonus niger), surgeonfish, and kingfish (Caranx ignobilis) move in coordinated clouds, creating a dynamic overhead display. This lively ecosystem provides a rich backdrop as you prepare to venture into the deeper sections of the site.

The dive truly unfolds as you reach the southern end of the ridge, where a valley opens up, flanked by several prominent pinnacles. Maintaining buoyancy here is key, as you drift through this open-water channel. Keep your gaze directed towards the sand, as large stingrays often lie motionless on the seabed, perfectly camouflaged against the contours.

One of the defining features of Table Top is its suitability for deep exploration, generally requiring conditions with mild currents. Nitrox is highly recommended for this site, given that its typical depth ranges from 26 to 34 metres – consistently a bit deeper than many other local sites. This allows for extended bottom time within no-decompression limits, enhancing your experience.

The ascent provides its own highlight, particularly during the lengthy drifting safety stop. This shallow phase of the dive is often accompanied by devil rays (Mobula mobular) as they frequent the cleaning stations found on the shallower sections of the reef. Observing these graceful creatures in their natural environment offers a fitting conclusion to a deep dive.

Diving conditions

Table Top is an Advanced level dive site, with depths ranging from 26 to 34 metres. It is best enjoyed in mild current conditions. Nitrox is recommended due to the depth profile of the dive. Tofo offers good diving year-round, with summer (December-May) bringing warmer water and calm seas, while winter (June-October) can be cooler but also marks the whale season for the region. Be aware that August and September can be windy, potentially leading to choppier surface conditions.
