Located in Shelly Beach, South Africa, Dive In Adventure Tours operates at the gateway to some of the most dynamic marine environments in the country. The centre is positioned to access the legendary Protea Banks, an offshore reef situated approximately 7–8 km out to sea, as well as the renowned Aliwal Shoal.

This is not a destination for casual reef cruising. The area is defined by the powerful Agulhas Current, which creates a high-energy environment perfect for advanced drift diving and significant pelagic activity. Divers come here specifically to encounter large sharks in a true blue-water setting.

As a woman-owned PADI 5 Star dive centre, the team is built on local knowledge and daily experience in these specific waters. The crew works these currents regularly, ensuring that briefings and dive profiles account for the unique demands of the offshore reef.

Safety is integrated into their operational DNA, with GPS tracking used for every diver to manage the risks associated with drift diving and open ocean conditions. The centre maintains a strong commitment to conservation and ethical practices, focusing on education to foster a better understanding of shark behaviour.

Instruction is available in English, French, and Spanish. The centre also coordinates annual expeditions for the Sardine Run, a major seasonal event in the region.

The centre operates boats with a capacity of 10 divers per trip. Dives typically depart from the Shelly Beach Launch Site at 07:00. On board, divers are provided with warm coffee, sandwiches, and biscuits to ensure a comfortable experience between dives.

The primary draw of this region is the sheer abundance of large pelagics. You can encounter Tiger sharks and Bull sharks throughout the year, with Hammerhead sharks appearing from November to April. Ragged-Tooth sharks are a winter highlight, frequently seen from May to October.

Other significant species include Oceanic Blacktip sharks, Silky sharks, and Dusky sharks. During the summer months, from November to May, Tiger sharks are a regular presence, while Giant Guitar sharks can be found from December to April. The area also hosts Eagle rays and Devil rays.

Beyond sharks, the ecosystem supports a wide array of life including Barracuda, Tuna, Kingfish, and various species of Dolphin. During the winter migration, Humpback whales are frequently sighted in the area.

For those interested in the seasonal Sardine Run, the waters become incredibly active during June and July. The reef structures and blue water environments are home to diverse fish populations, including various reef fish and schools of fish.

Diving in this area is defined by the Agulhas Current, which brings warm, nutrient-rich water and creates strong, consistent currents. This leads to frequent drift diving conditions where negative entries are common to reach the reef quickly.

Ocean conditions can be challenging, particularly during boat launches through the surf at Shelly Beach. Divers should be prepared for a dynamic environment where the reef is surrounded by the open ocean.
