Located in Durban, South Africa, this centre serves as a gateway to some of the most diverse marine environments in the region. Whether you are looking for the high-energy drift dives of the offshore reefs or the sheltered environments closer to the coast, the operation is structured to meet different experience levels.

The centre operates primarily out of two key locations: Vetchies for the Durban sites and Umkomaas for the Aliwal Shoal area. This dual focus allows you to choose between the more accessible reef flats and the deeper, more adventurous offshore excursions.

As a PADI affiliated centre, the team provides a structured approach to both recreational and professional training. They manage everything from introductory Discover Scuba Diving sessions to advanced professional development for those pursuing a Divemaster qualification.

The centre places a strong emphasis on safety and matching the diver to the appropriate environment. They select dive sites based on current sea conditions and visibility to ensure that every excursion, from a beginner's first descent to a seasoned diver's wreck exploration, is handled with appropriate oversight.

The training programme covers the full PADI spectrum, starting with Open Water Diver and progressing through Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver. For those looking to enter the professional ranks, Divemaster courses are also offered.

Specialised training is available for specific interests, including the PADI Wreck Diver course and the PADI Nitrox course. They also provide Emergency First Responder training and Refresher courses to ensure your skills remain sharp before heading out to the more challenging sites.

The offshore adventures are conducted from a 2024 19ft Evo Cat. For standard offshore adventure rides, the vessel carries up to 5 guests, while the shark cage snorkelling trips typically limit capacity to 6 people from a total of 8 on board.

A full range of rental kit is available on-site for those not travelling with their own equipment. This includes regulators, BCDs, cylinders, wetsuits, fins, masks, and snorkels. Divers requiring specific items can also hire dive computers, torches, compasses, or weight belts.

Nitrox is available for use, supporting divers looking to extend their bottom time on the deeper reef and wreck sites.

The marine life at Aliwal Shoal and Durban is defined by seasonal visitors and resident reef species. During the ragged-tooth shark season, the Cathedral and Raggies Cave sites become hubs for these sharks, alongside stingrays and large schools of fish.

Pelagic action is a highlight of the offshore sites, where you can encounter hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, and occasional tiger sharks or Zambezi sharks. Dolphins and whales are also known to frequent these waters.

On the reefs, you will find a steady population of turtles, potato groupers, moray eels, and lionfish. The smaller inhabitants include cuttlefish, octopuses, scorpionfish, and various species of reef fish.

Macro life is abundant in the crevices and sandy channels, particularly at sites like Eelskins. Keep an eye out for colourful nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), porcelain crabs, and various species of anemones and sponges that decorate the reef structure.

Diving in this region requires an awareness of changing conditions, particularly at offshore sites like No.1 Reef where currents can become strong. The centre monitors sea states to select the safest and most productive sites for each trip.

Sites like The Bluff offer more relaxed, sheltered conditions, making them suitable for those working through their Open Water Diver certification or those preferring a calmer environment.
