Durban offers a unique diving landscape along the South African coast, where the warm currents meet a diverse range of marine habitats. From reef structures to open water encounters, the area provides a varied playground for divers of all experience levels.

The local waters are home to a variety of large pelagics and reef-dwelling species. You may encounter Manta ray (Mobula alfredi) and various species of Ray (Batoidea) patrolling the currents, alongside schools of fish that move in large, coordinated groups.

On the reef, the biodiversity is striking. Look for the honeycomb moray eels and various species of Eel (Anguilliformes) tucked into crevices, or keep an eye out for the Leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) camouflaged against the substrate. Ragged-tooth sharks and Batfish (Platax) are also part of the local ecosystem.

For those with an interest in macro life, the area offers plenty to observe. You can find Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani) amongst the smaller structures, as well as various paperfish and other reef fish inhabiting the complex environments of the seabed.
