Aliwal Shoal Adventures - Ocean Warriors

Located in Umkomaas, approximately 39 minutes south of Durban, Ocean Warriors Dive sits at the gateway to some of South Africa's most iconic marine environments. The centre is a specialist in the Aliwal Shoal area, a reef system renowned globally for its high concentration of pelagics and vibrant biodiversity.

For those looking to time their visit with major biological events, the centre is a primary hub for the annual Sardine Run. Beyond these seasonal migrations, the area offers a consistent calendar of reef and wreck diving, catering to those drawn to the rugged beauty of the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

The team is led by Julian Taylor, a former world champion lifeguard, alongside Emil and Travis Pirzenthal from Aliwal Shoal Adventures. The instructional staff includes Rae du Plessis, a PADI instructor and internationally recognised marine photographer who has completed over 12,000 dives specifically at Aliwal Shoal.

With a combined experience of over 25 years and a safety record exceeding 50,000 incident-free dives, the crew focuses on technical proficiency and environmental awareness. They offer a range of specialised training, including marine photography workshops and the PADI Dive Against Debris programme.

Ocean Warriors offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses, starting from Discover Scuba Diving and PADI Bubblemaker through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver. For those looking to progress their careers, they provide PADI Rescue Diver and Divemaster training.

Specialty certifications are a core part of the curriculum, including Nitrox, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Drift Diver. The centre also hosts specific training such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, Fish ID, and the PADI Sardine Run Specialty Certification.

The centre provides full kit hire for divers, including BCDs, regulators, cylinders, weights, wetsuits, masks, and fins. For those preferring to use their own equipment, a wide range of essential items is available.

Nitrox is available on-site for divers looking to extend their bottom times. The centre is also equipped to support night dives, providing the necessary facilities for preparing for nocturnal excursions.

The waters around Aliwal Shoal are famous for large pelagics. You can regularly encounter various shark species, including bull sharks, whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), tiger sharks, and blacktip sharks. Dolphins (Delphinidae) are also common visitors to the area.

During the winter months, the region hosts the massive Sardine Run migration. This seasonal event brings an incredible concentration of life to the coast, including various predatory fish and larger marine mammals.

Between June and October, Humpback whales can be seen in the area. You will also find a steady population of sea turtles and various rays, such as manta rays (Mobula alfredi), patrolling the reef and sandy bottom.

On the reef itself, look for humphead wrasses, tuna (Thunnus), and various species of pufferfish (Arothron hispidus). The biodiversity is rounded out by colourful reef fish, including redtoothed triggerfish and boxfish (Ostraciidae).

Diving in this region is characterised by the dynamic nature of the South African coast. Divers should be prepared for drift diving, particularly when navigating through swim-throughs or along the reef walls.

Seasonal migrations, most notably the Sardine Run in winter, significantly influence the local marine activity and can change the nature of the dives from standard reef exploration to high-energy pelagic encounters.
