South Sands, Umkomaas: Reef & Sand Bottom Diving

Dropping onto South Sands, you'll find a blend of open sand flats and distinct coral reef formations. The average depth here is around 15 metres, pushing to a maximum of 18 metres. This undulating topography provides distinct zones for marine life; the sand offers foraging grounds for bottom dwellers, while the reef segments create structure and shelter.

As you traverse the sandy expanses, keep an eye out for rays and skates that often camouflage themselves against the bottom. Sand sharks and guitar sharks are also resident here, frequently encountered as they cruise along the edges of the reef patches or rest on the sand. The transition zones between sand and coral are particularly active, drawing a variety of species.

The fragmented reef parcels at South Sands are rich in smaller, resident marine life. Look closely within the crevices and under ledges, and you'll find Natal catsharks and spiny lobsters. These coral outcroppings also host schools of redtooth triggerfish (Odonus niger), adding bursts of colour against the hard corals.

While the reef and sand offer distinct microhabitats, South Sands also demands attention to the open blue. This site is a known transit path for pelagic species. Keep scanning away from the reef for hunting schools of game fish, tuna, and various types of rays, including manta rays and devil rays, as they pass through the area.

Beyond the larger pelagics, the reef sections provide excellent opportunities for macro observation. Boxfish and pufferfish are common inhabitants, often seen navigating the coral structures. This blend of environments makes South Sands rewarding for divers who appreciate both the grandeur of larger marine life and the intricate details of smaller reef creatures.

White-tip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) are also regularly seen circling the reef sections, often resting on the sand nearby or patrolling the perimeter. Their presence adds to the dynamic feel of the dive, reminding you of the healthy ecosystem Umkomaas supports. This interaction between resident reef sharks and transient pelagics defines a typical dive here.
