Blue Ocean Dive Resort

Blue Ocean Dive Resort is situated in Umkomaas, South Africa, positioned perfectly to access the Aliwal Shoal. This fossilised sand dune reef is a Marine Protected Area and a Mission Blue Hope Spot, stretching approximately 3 km long and 1 km wide. The location is widely regarded as one of the premier diving destinations in the world, offering everything from large pelagics to intricate macro life.

The resort operates with a 'all-in-one' philosophy, combining a professional dive centre with the Dive Lodge, a colonial-style hotel built in 1934. You can transition from the water to the restaurant or bar without leaving the site, all while overlooking the Indian Ocean and the Umkomaas golf course. It is a well-established operation, having been active since 2008.

As a PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre, the resort maintains high professional standards with an experienced team. The crew includes skippers, Dive Masters, and specialised shark guides who are accustomed to the specific requirements of diving with large predators.

Safety is a core component of their operations, with oxygen and radio communications available on all vessels. For divers returning to the water after a long break, the centre offers pool refresher courses to ensure your skills are sharp before heading out to the reef.

The centre is also well-equipped to handle families; children can be paired with a qualified instructor or Dive Master if requested by parents. For those looking to extend their South African adventure, the team can also assist in organising 'Big 5' safaris.

The centre provides a comprehensive range of PADI training programmes. This covers the entire spectrum of certification, from initial entry-level courses through to advanced training.

The centre operates three 8m RIB/Zodiac style boats, each with a capacity for 8 divers. These vessels are used to access the various sites around Aliwal Shoal, whether you are targeting the reef top or heading out for deeper encounters.

All boats are equipped with radio communication and oxygen for safety. Depending on the specific trip and group size, a fourth boat can be made available for larger parties.

A full range of rental kit is available on-site, allowing you to travel light. This includes regulators, wetsuits, fins, and masks. The centre also provides cylinders and weight belts at no additional cost.

For those who prefer to use their own equipment, there are facilities to rinse and maintain your gear. The resort is a professional operation where safety is prioritised, and they strongly recommend that all divers maintain valid insurance through DAN SA.

The Aliwal Shoal area is a powerhouse of marine biodiversity. You will frequently encounter species such as Dolphin (Delphinidae), turtles, potato groupers, and moray eels. The reef is also home to manta rays (Mobula alfredi) and various reef fish.

During the winter months, specifically from May to July, the Sardine Run brings incredible activity to the water. This seasonal event draws massive numbers of predators and pelagics to the area.

Shark encounters are a major draw here. Depending on when you visit, you may see Ragged-tooth sharks from June to November, or Hammerhead sharks between October and March. Whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) and Tiger sharks are commonly seen from December to May, while Zambezi sharks also appear during this same window. Humpback whales are also present from May to November.

For the macro enthusiasts, the reef hosts a variety of smaller life, including Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), Boxfish (Ostraciidae), and Pufferfish (Arothron hispidus). You may also spot Tuna (Thunnus), skates, and various species of Ray (Batoidea).

The diving environment can be adventurous, with warm Agulhas currents flowing through the region, particularly during the winter months. These currents can occasionally make conditions challenging, which is often preferred by divers seeking a more active experience.

Launching is conducted either from the mouth of the UmKomazi River or directly from the beach, depending on the specific site and daily conditions. The management and skippers make all final decisions regarding dive safety based on weather and site accessibility.
