The Sands Beach Resort

The Sands Beach Resort is a 20-room resort on Dongwe Bay, with the beach directly outside and a 30-metre outdoor pool at its centre. The layout gives you two easy ways to spend the afternoon: settle into a lounger beside the water or take the shorter route to the sand, where the private beach comes with loungers and parasols.

This is a practical choice for divers who want more than a bed between boat days. There is a restaurant, a beach bar, room service, air conditioning, WiFi and daily housekeeping, so the essentials are close at hand when the salt, sun and early start have done their work. Families are welcome, but children are accommodated only in the Family Villa; couples can instead choose a smaller bungalow or a sea-view villa.

The atmosphere is built around the coast rather than a packed programme. Live music, themed dinner nights and entertainment staff add some life to the evening, while the beach, garden and pool leave plenty of room for doing absolutely nothing. A sound plan, particularly when tomorrow’s alarm is connected to a dive boat.

The hotel is in Bwejuu, Tanzania, on the quiet south-east coast of Zanzibar, beside Dongwe Bay. You have direct access to a broad white-sand private beach, with the sea forming the useful part of the local map rather than merely appearing in the brochure photograph.

Michamvi Pingwe Beach is about 350 metres away, while Bwejuu Beach is roughly 1 km from the resort. Michamvi Kae Beach is about 2.5 miles away and Paje Beach about 4.5 miles away, giving you a little more choice when you want to explore beyond the resort’s own stretch of coast.

For meals away from the hotel, Blue Dongwe Jetty is about 0.5 miles away, Door Restaurant about 1.5 miles and Shells Restaurant about 2 miles. Stone Town is within about 37 miles, so it works as an excursion rather than a casual stroll after breakfast. The nearest airport, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, is about 34 miles by road, with the journey taking approximately one hour by car.

The room choice is less about collecting categories and more about deciding how much space you want around your diving kit, your travelling companion and your tendency to spread out. The Standard Bungalow is the straightforward couple’s option, with a king-size bed, terrace, air conditioning, a minibar, a safe and views towards the ocean or garden. The Standard Twin Room gives two separate beds, which is useful when sharing without sharing a mattress.

For a more spacious stay, the Villa with Sea View is designed for two and puts the emphasis firmly on the coast. Couples wanting more room outside the sleeping hours can choose it for the view, while the Two-Bedroom Villa with Private Pool gives a group of up to four its own pool and two bathrooms. The Family Villa also sleeps up to four, with two single beds and a king-size bed; it is the villa reserved for families with children.

Across the accommodation, terraces or balconies make it easier to step outside without turning the room into a beach bag depot. Air conditioning helps with recovery in Zanzibar’s heat, while a fan, mosquito net, refrigerator and kettle cover the small but useful details: cool water when you return, a drink before dinner and fewer negotiations with the local insects. Private bathrooms, towels, hairdryers and free toiletries are included, with daily housekeeping keeping the practical side of the stay moving.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on a terrace, with international favourites, local flavours and fresh ingredients. Breakfast is available as a buffet, with continental, full English or Irish, vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free choices, so you can keep it simple or build the sort of plate that makes an early boat departure look more manageable.

There is one bar, set on the beach. It handles fresh juices, light lunches, Italian coffee and cocktails at sunset, as well as the quieter drink when the sensible evening plan is a chair, the sound of the waves and no further decisions. The sand is only a few steps away, which matters more than a clever name when you are still wearing the day’s tiredness.

A snack bar and minibar give you additional ways to bridge the gap between meals, while room service lets you eat without returning to public life immediately. Special-diet menus can be requested, and themed dinner nights, live music and a happy hour provide some variety without turning the resort into a full-time entertainment venue.

The main pool is a 30-metre outdoor pool surrounded by loungers, parasols and tropical greenery. A smaller circular pool is set aside for younger guests, making the pool area workable for both a quiet length and a family afternoon. Pool and beach towels are available, so you do not have to turn your room towel into a piece of improvised equipment.

The beach is the obvious place to slow the pace, but the resort also offers snorkelling and boat excursions, along with water-sports facilities. Bicycle hire, car hire and a tour desk make it possible to leave the property when the horizon needs changing. Local culture tours, cycling, horse riding, windsurfing and fishing are also available through the resort or nearby providers.

For a softer landing after the water, the wellness facilities include massages, an open-air bath, a massage chair, body scrubs, facials, manicures, pedicures and hair styling. Families have babysitting or child services, board games and puzzles, while adults can choose the shared lounge, the garden or a lounger under an umbrella. The resort also arranges excursions to Jozani Forest, Prison Island, Safari Blue, Stone Town and a spice tour.

Airport transfers are available through the hotel, arranged between Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and the resort. The drive takes approximately one hour by car, and car hire is also available if you want to make your own way around the island. Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed.

Check-in starts at 14:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at arrival, and the hotel asks you to provide your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out runs from 02:00 to 11:00, an unusually broad window on paper, so check the exact arrangement for your departure rather than relying on the clock to do the planning for you.

The front desk operates around the clock and offers luggage storage, concierge assistance and a tour desk. WiFi is free in the public areas and in the accommodation, and room service is available. Children of any age are welcome, with the Family Villa the accommodation option for children; cots and extra beds can be requested, subject to availability. The minimum age for check-in is 18, and pets are not allowed.
