Eight rooms, a garden, and a boutique-hotel feel give Gaia Villas a more personal scale than a large resort. You come back to a place built for slowing down: sit outside, cool off in the pool, and let the day lose its urgency before dinner somewhere in Nungwi.

The setting suits divers who want the sea nearby but do not need to sleep with their feet on a beachfront path. Air conditioning, ceiling fans, daily housekeeping and free drinking water take care of the practical side of the stay. The mood is simple and relaxed, with enough comfort to make the gap between the first dive and bedtime feel properly useful.

You are in Nungwi, Tanzania, on the northern coast of Zanzibar, with the hotel set in a tropical garden near beaches, restaurants and shops. Nungwi Beach is a seven-minute walk away, while Royal Beach is about 1,600 feet from the property. Kendwa Beach is roughly 1 mile away.

That puts the hotel close enough for a swim, a stroll or a change of scenery without making the beach your only option. The Corner is about a six-minute walk away, with Sexy Fish and Amaan Cottages Restaurant also within roughly half a mile. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is about 37 miles away by road.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and outdoor room you want. For two, the Double Room with Patio keeps things straightforward, with a king-size bed and a private outdoor area. If you are travelling as a family or simply prefer more room around the luggage, the Suite with Terrace is the sensible step up and is designed for up to three guests.

The details that matter once you are back from the water are well covered. Rooms have air conditioning and a ceiling fan, so you can choose between a properly cooled night and some air movement overhead. A mini-fridge is useful for keeping drinking water cold, while the mosquito net, private bathroom, shower, towels and toiletries handle the less glamorous parts of travel without fuss.

Garden or pool views give the rooms their outlook, and private entrances, patios or terraces let you step outside without turning the bed into the only place to sit. Daily housekeeping keeps the return from the beach manageable, and universal sockets cover European, American and British plugs. A drying rack is available for clothes; use it for your swimwear and leave the dive kit to the dive centre.

Breakfast is included, and it is prepared in-house rather than treated as an afterthought. You can choose from continental, vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free options, with warm dishes, pancakes, juice and fruit on the table. Breakfast can also be served in your room, which is handy when an early start has left you more interested in coffee than conversation.

The meal is served in the garden, where the setting does some of the work without needing a soundtrack or a dress code. A floating brunch is also available for the occasion when lunch should arrive in the pool. It is a rather more deliberate choice than eating a biscuit over your dive bag.

Gaia Villas offers a bed-and-breakfast formula rather than an all-day dining programme. For the rest of the day, Nungwi's restaurants are within walking distance, so you can eat locally instead of planning every meal around the hotel.

The main place to reset is the outdoor infinity pool, open 24 hours a day. There is a flamingo float and a water hammock, which may sound faintly ridiculous until you have spent enough time carrying equipment around in tropical heat. Pool and beach towels, sun loungers and outdoor seating make it easy to stay put for a while.

The tropical garden gives you somewhere to sit between outings, with garden furniture, terraces and patios extending the living space outdoors. Nungwi Beach is close on foot, while snorkelling, horse riding and fishing are available in the surrounding area. Horse riding and fishing are off-site activities with an additional charge.

For couples, this works best as a low-key rhythm: breakfast in the garden, a swim, a walk towards the beach and an unhurried return. There is also free WiFi throughout the property, should you feel the need to reconnect with the world before ignoring it again.

A paid airport shuttle is available, and the property also arranges a paid shuttle service. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is about 37 miles away by road, with the drive listed at roughly one hour and six minutes. Free public parking is available on site, with no reservation needed.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to midnight, and check-out is from 10:00 to 11:00. The minimum age for check-in is 21. Children over five are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so choose the room layout around the people actually travelling rather than relying on a last-minute sleeping arrangement.

Cash is accepted for payment. Luggage storage, lockers, a wake-up service, daily housekeeping and laundry add useful support around travel days. Outside guests are not permitted on the property, apart from the cafe area, and pets are not allowed.

Drinking water is supplied in reusable bottles, which are refilled daily. It is a small, practical measure, but a useful one in a place where buying a new bottle every time you return thirsty would quickly become part of the routine.

The approach is easy to follow during your stay: refill, carry on, and keep the poolside water close at hand. No grand speech required.
