Kibanda Lodge and Beach Club

Kibanda Lodge is a small lodge with its own restaurant, garden and access to the Kibanda Beach Club on Nungwi beach. The idea is straightforward: a comfortable base for the sea, with enough food, shade and evening life to keep the non-diving hours from becoming an afterthought.

The lodge suits divers travelling as a couple, families and anyone who prefers a less formal place to return to. You can move between the garden, shared lounge, terrace and beach club without turning the evening into an expedition. There is also a spa, a restaurant and a bar by the sand, so your post-dive routine can remain pleasingly simple: shower, eat, sit down, repeat.

The atmosphere shifts towards music at sunset. DJ sets take place each day, with a larger Sunday party running from the afternoon into the night. If you want an early night before diving, this is worth bearing in mind; if you enjoy a little rhythm with your sundowner, it is part of the lodge’s character.

You are in Nungwi, Tanzania, at the northern end of Zanzibar. The lodge is on the seafront, while the Kibanda Beach Club sits directly on Nungwi’s white-sand beach with sun loungers and an open-air restaurant and bar.

Nungwi Beach is about 0.15 miles away, and Royal Beach is at a similar distance. A free shuttle takes you to the nearby beach in around five minutes, useful when you are carrying more enthusiasm than energy. Kendwa Beach is about 1.4 miles away.

The location also puts several places to eat within easy reach. The Corner is about 0.1 miles away, while Sexy Fish and Amaan Cottages Restaurant are each roughly 0.1 miles from the lodge. Mnarani Aquarium, the marine turtle conservation pond, is about 0.5 miles away. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is around 38 miles by road, with a driving time of about one hour and seven minutes.

The rooms are arranged for practical tropical living rather than elaborate hotel theatre. Air conditioning and a fan help you cool down properly, while a mosquito net adds a useful layer for the night. You also have a private entrance, tiled or marble flooring, a wardrobe and a drying rack for clothes; the latter is handy for swimwear, though it is not a substitute for a dive-centre drying area.

For two people, the Standard Double Room or Double Room keeps things uncomplicated, with a king-size bed alongside a single bed. If you are travelling with family or simply prefer more elbow room, the Deluxe Double Room is the sensible choice, with sleeping arrangements for up to four guests. Family rooms are available, and children of all ages are welcome.

Every unit has a private bathroom with a shower, towels, free toiletries and a hairdryer. Balconies and views vary, with garden, pool or inner-courtyard outlooks among the possibilities. Free WiFi covers the lodge, although the recorded WiFi score is lower than the scores for comfort and cleanliness, so anyone planning to work between dives should keep expectations practical rather than heroic.

Breakfast is included and comes in continental, vegetarian and buffet form. You can also take it in your room, which is exactly the sort of option that earns its keep when an early start has made conversation seem unnecessary. Packed lunches are available for days spent away from the lodge.

There are two restaurants. Kibanda Restaurant focuses on local cooking, while the in-house restaurant also serves Italian dishes and caters for vegetarian and dairy-free diets. Special diet menus can be arranged, and the dining area includes tables and seating rather than forcing every meal into a hurried stop between activities.

At the beach, Kibanda Beach Club Restaurant puts the meal on the sand, with open-air seating and large sofas facing the Indian Ocean. Its adjoining Kibanda Beach Club Bar is the place for a drink at sunset, with wine and champagne available, a snack bar for something less ambitious, and happy hour as part of the evening rhythm. Live music, DJ sets and the Sunday party give the beach club a livelier edge than the word “lodge” might suggest.

The outdoor swimming pool is surrounded by gardens, giving you somewhere to cool off without committing to another trip to the coast. Sun loungers, umbrellas, pool and beach towels, a sun terrace and outdoor furniture cover the essential business of staying horizontal. There is also a shared lounge with a TV area for the moments when the heat has won.

Kibanda Spa offers massage treatments, including head, neck, back, foot, hand and full-body massages. A massage chair, spa facilities, a relaxation lounge and a hot tub add further ways to persuade tired muscles that tomorrow’s plans can wait. The useful detail here is not a long treatment menu; it is the ability to deal with the familiar post-dive complaint of legs that have become oddly heavier than the rest of you.

When you want to leave the property but not spend the day organising logistics, the lodge arranges walking tours, bicycle rental, cultural excursions and wildlife observation. Trips listed include Stone Town, Jozani Forest, Prison Island, the spice farm, the seaweed farm, Fukuchani Caves and a safari in Mikumi National Park. Snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing, boat excursions and water-sports facilities are also available. Some activities carry an additional charge.

Evenings can be quiet in the shared areas or more animated at the beach club. Sunset dhow aperitifs combine three hours at sea, drinks, music and a DJ set; on Sundays, the beach club’s party runs from 14:00 until midnight.

Check-in runs from 12:00 to 22:00, and check-out is from 02:00 to 10:00. You need to give the lodge your expected arrival time, and check-in requires photo identification and a credit card. Payment is accepted in cash.

An airport shuttle is available, and car hire can be arranged. Private parking is available on site without reservation, which is useful if you are travelling around Zanzibar by car. Luggage storage, private check-in and check-out, currency exchange, daily housekeeping, room service and a concierge service are also available. Laundry and ironing services cover the less glamorous side of a week in salt water and tropical humidity.

The lodge has free WiFi throughout, air conditioning in the rooms and upper floors accessible by stairs only. Pets are welcome on request. Cots and extra beds are available on request, subject to the room selected and availability, making the Deluxe Double Room the more practical route for families who need additional sleeping space.

The lodge’s stated setting is closely tied to the sea, the beach and Zanzibar’s natural surroundings. Its activity programme includes visits to Jozani Forest, the seaweed farm, Fukuchani Caves and the marine turtle conservation pond at Mnarani Aquarium.
