Seahorse Dive Shop

Located in the heart of Placencia, Seahorse Dive Shop has been a fixture of the local diving community since 1994. As one of the oldest dive operators in the area, they provide access to the vast ecosystems of the Belize Barrier Reef, the largest in the Western Hemisphere.

The centre serves as a base for exploring everything from shallow reef flats and coral gardens to deep walls and underwater canyons. Whether you are looking for a relaxed day of snorkeling or an advanced drift dive, the shop's long history in the region provides a reliable foundation for your trip.

Founded by Brian Young Sr., the centre operates with a focus on professional service and local expertise. They hold the Gold Standard certification from the Belize Tourism Board, which recognises their adherence to specific hygiene and safety protocols.

The team is experienced in handling a variety of diver needs, from those completing their first Discover Scuba Diving session to advanced divers seeking more challenging environments. All instruction and guidance are conducted in English.

The centre offers a full spectrum of PADI training programmes. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or work towards their Open Water Diver certification, with Open Water Referral options also available.

For those looking to progress their skills, the shop provides Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Refresher or ReActivate courses for returning divers. The curriculum covers all fundamental levels of certification.

The shop operates the Little Blue, a 30ft vessel equipped with a small cabin for shelter. Powered by twin 140hp motors, the boat is designed to reach the various reef sites and cays surrounding Placencia.

During full-day excursions, the crew provides water, snacks, and lunch on board. The boat is used for a variety of trips, including reef dives, canyon explorations, and seasonal trips to the Gladden Split marine reserve.

Seahorse Dive Shop is a fully equipped PADI centre providing a complete range of rental kit for divers. This includes regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, fins, and masks.

Safety is a priority on site, with oxygen for emergency use always available. The centre also organises lionfish hunts to help manage local populations, providing tridents to any volunteers who wish to assist.

The reef ecosystems here are incredibly diverse, featuring a wide array of reef fish, including Damselfish (Pomacentridae), Wrasse (Labridae), and various species of Angelfish (Pomacanthidae). You will often encounter groupers (Epinephelus), snappers, and large Jacks (Carangidae) patrolling the structures.

Large pelagics are a significant draw, particularly around the Gladden Split. Between March and June, following the full moon, whale sharks visit the area to feed. Other large species include various sharks, such as nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum), bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, and reef sharks.

Macro life and crustaceans are abundant throughout the coral gardens and canyons. Look for lobster (Homaridae), various crabs (Brachyura), moray eels (Muraenidae), and cleaning shrimp tucked into the reef.

Fixed life forms provide the essential architecture for the reef, with a vast variety of corals and sponges (Porifera). You will also see hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and various rays (Batoidea) moving across the sandy bottom or near the walls.

Diving in the Gladden Split can involve strong currents, particularly when visiting the area for whale shark sightings. The open-sea nature of these sites means the swell can occasionally be significant, which may affect those prone to motion sickness.

While many of the shallower reef sites near Laughing Bird Caye remain calm, the offshore excursions to the atolls and deeper walls require more experienced buoyancy control and an awareness of changing conditions.
