St. George's Caye Resort

St. George’s Caye Resort is an adults-only island retreat with 15 bungalows and a simple proposition: stay on a private caye, eat what the kitchen prepares, and let the mainland become somebody else’s problem for a while. There are no roads or cars on the island, and the resort is the only business there. That makes the place particularly suited to divers who prefer their downtime quiet, self-contained and close to the water.

The style is rustic rather than formal. Your bungalow has a private entrance, a covered outdoor space and a view that depends on the category, while the main lodge gives you somewhere to sit, read, use the WiFi and talk through the day’s diving without competing with a television. Guests aged 15 and over are welcome; divers can be aged 13 and over.

The Booking location is Ladyville, Belize, while the resort itself sits on a private island around 12 km off the coast of Belize City. The island is beachfront, with direct access to a private white-sand beach and the protected water of the bay. A few steps from your bungalow, you can reach a sun lounger, a hammock or the sea. No taxi tour of the neighbourhood is required; the neighbourhood is mostly water.

Belize City is about 7 miles away, which keeps mainland excursions practical without turning the resort into a city hotel with a decorative palm tree. The nearest listed airports are Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airport and Caye Chapel Airport, each around 8 miles away by straight-line distance, with Caye Caulker Airport around 12 miles away. The transfer itself combines a van journey and a boat crossing.

The bungalows are made for couples rather than groups. Choose the over-water option if waking above the lagoon matters more than having a garden outside, or the ocean-front option if you want the sea at the front of your room. Garden-view bungalows keep the same private-island setting while putting the emphasis on the tropical surroundings rather than the waterline. Each room has one bathroom with a shower, hairdryer, toiletries and bathrobes.

Air conditioning matters when the Belizean heat has followed you back from the boat. A fan gives you another way to move the air, while the mosquito net is a useful detail for nights when the windows and sea breeze are doing some of the work. There is also a refrigerator, linen, a balcony or terrace, and outdoor furniture. The covered porch and hammock are well suited to the post-dive ritual: towel, drink, feet up, no urgent reason to move.

The resort keeps the rooms deliberately free of television and telephones, with WiFi available in the lodge and around the resort. That is less useful if you need constant connectivity, and rather useful if you have spent the day looking at a reef instead of a screen. Daily housekeeping, room service, luggage storage and concierge assistance are available.

This is a full-board stay, with breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared for you at St. George’s Kitchen. The open-air dining room overlooks the ocean, and meals are shared on the covered dining porch. Breakfast is prepared to order, while lunch and dinner follow carefully selected set menus, including a daily four-course dinner. Coffee, tea and fresh fruit juice are delivered to your cabana each morning, with coffee and tea available throughout the day.

The kitchen works from a farm-to-table approach, combining Belizean, Caribbean and Latin cooking with European and American favourites. Fresh fruit, vegetables and meat come from the chef’s village on the mainland, and seafood is bought directly from local fishermen when their boats pass the island. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and shellfish-free diets can be catered for.

There is one bar, the Sand Bar Lounge, inside the main lodge. You can settle into a padded chair or a swing facing the ocean with signature cocktails, rums and local beers, plus books, games and free WiFi. Happy hour, themed dinner nights and the option of a private table for couples add a little variety without turning the island into a resort production line.

The saltwater pool is available around the clock, and the private beach gives you two very different ways to cool down without going anywhere. Swim in the protected bay straight from the beach, or claim a lounger, chair or hammock beneath the thatched palapa on the caye’s windward side. Beach and pool towels, sun umbrellas and loungers are available, so the practical business of lying down has been properly covered.

For a little movement, you can use the kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling equipment, sailing boats and Hobie Cats. Windsurfing, fishing and boat excursions are also available, while cycling, hiking, cooking classes, wildlife observation and cultural trips offer reasons to leave the water for a few hours. Darts, board games and puzzles cover the less ambitious afternoons.

The Island Spa is the place for a Swedish, deep-tissue or hot-stone massage, a facial, body scrub, manicure, pedicure or head-to-toe treatment. On most Saturday evenings, the resort adds a beach barbecue and bonfire. Mainland outings can take you to Caye Caulker, Goff’s Caye, Maya ruins, jungle cave tubing, zip-lining and Blue Hole National Park. In other words, a second week would not be entirely unreasonable.

Arrival is part of the island experience. The airport welcome continues by van for around 20 minutes to the marina, followed by around 20 minutes by boat to the resort. Airport transfers are arranged by the resort, with the land and sea journey included in the stay. The same service can collect you from another location in Belize City. Once you arrive, private and express check-in and check-out, concierge assistance and luggage storage help keep the transition straightforward.

Check-in runs from 14:00 and check-out is by 11:00. Full board is required, so this is not an address for building your own restaurant-hopping itinerary. Cash is accepted, and pets are not allowed. WiFi is free throughout the resort, while a safety deposit box, wake-up service and daily housekeeping cover the smaller practicalities.

Plan the age policy carefully before you book. Guests aged 15 and over are welcome, with divers accepted from 13; children can stay when the entire resort is privately booked. There are no cots or extra beds, and accommodation policies vary by room category.

Filtered drinking water is available throughout the resort through a reverse-osmosis filtration system. The saltwater pool is also designed to use much less chlorine than a conventional swimming pool, keeping the practical maintenance approach closer to the island’s marine setting.
