Hotel Camões gives you a base in the middle of Ponta Delgada rather than a resort bubble. That puts you close to the town’s daily life, with a restaurant, bar and lounge downstairs when you want food or a drink without turning the evening into another expedition.

You will be met by a Portuguese- and English-speaking team, with reception open around the clock. The tone is practical and personal: air-conditioned rooms, free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, room service and somewhere to sit with a drink while the ambient music does its best not to compete with your conversation.

The address is in the historic centre of Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel, Portugal. Portas da Cidade is about 0.2 miles away, while the natural pools at Portas do Mar and the marina are roughly 0.1 mile from the hotel. The Carlos Machado Museum and the University of the Azores are also close, as are the Teatro Micaelense, the cruise terminals and the municipal market.

This is a town stay, so the useful parts of Ponta Delgada are on foot. Restaurants and bars sit within a few minutes' walk, including Musaxi, Coriscada Bar and Avenida dos Anjos. For a proper beach outing, São Roque Beach is about 2 miles away by car, Milicias Beach about 2.2 miles, and Populo Beach about 2.9 miles; the drives take around four, five and seven minutes respectively.

The rooms keep the hotel’s classic style, with wooden floors and furniture rather than a glossy, anonymous finish. Air conditioning helps when you return warm and salt-streaked, while heating is available for cooler evenings. For two, the Double Room is the straightforward choice, with either twin beds or a double bed. Travelling as a small family or trio, the Family Room uses three single beds and gives you more room to spread out than the compact double rooms. Some rooms have a private terrace, which is the detail worth looking for if you like to sit outside rather than go straight from wet kit to the bar.

Daily housekeeping and room service keep the arrangements simple, and breakfast can also be brought to your room. A fold-up bed is available as a room amenity, while cots can be requested for babies; extra beds are not available. Facilities for disabled guests are also provided, and the hotel has non-smoking rooms.

Wine or champagne, fruit and other drinks can be arranged, but the useful distinction is the formula: this is a hotel with breakfast, a restaurant and bars, not an all-inclusive operation. In the vicinity, several restaurants and bars are only a short walk away, so you can change the scenery without needing a car.

The hotel keeps the quieter part of the day uncomplicated. You can book a massage, settle into the shared lounge and television area, or walk down to the natural pools around Portas do Mar. The Complexo de Piscinas de S. Pedro is about 250 feet away, close enough for a change of scene without turning relaxation into a full-day project.

São Miguel also gives you plenty to do beyond the water: hiking, cycling, horse riding and canoeing are available as activities, while fishing takes place off site. The hotel’s maritime-tourism partnerships open the door to boat excursions and whale- and dolphin-watching, a particularly sensible option for a non-diving day in the Azores.

João Paulo II Airport is about 1.3 miles away by car, or roughly 1.1 miles on foot. Car hire is available through the hotel, useful if you plan to explore beyond Ponta Delgada and reach São Miguel’s beaches, trails and coastal viewpoints. Nearby car parks are subject to payment, so a hired car is best treated as an excursion tool rather than something to leave beside the front door.

Reception is open 24 hours, with concierge assistance, luggage storage and daily housekeeping. Check-in runs from 15:00 to 23:30, and you need to let the hotel know your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 00:00 to 11:00, which covers both early departures and a more civilised morning after a late return.
