Best Spot Azores Dive Center

Located at the Marina de Pere de Teive in Ponta Delgada, Best Spot Azores Dive Center serves as a primary hub for diving in São Miguel. As the only centre in the Azores with both SSI and PADI affiliations, it provides a high level of professional oversight for every diver, from those taking their first breaths underwater to professional-level candidates.

The centre is deeply rooted in the local marine environment, managed by a team that combines marine biology expertise with a strong social commitment. This scientific approach means your dives are often guided by those who study the very ecosystems you are exploring, including active photo-identification projects for Mobula rays.

The team is led by a marine biologist and a social worker, ensuring that both the environmental and human aspects of the diving experience are handled with precision. The instructors are highly qualified, including PADI Elite AWARD Instructors and SSI Instructor Trainers who have been teaching in the archipelago since 2007.

Safety and attention to detail are maintained through a strict diver-to-guide ratio, with a maximum of six divers per guide. For those trying the water for the first time, the ratio for Discover Scuba Diving is even tighter at 1:2. This ensures that even in the more challenging offshore conditions, you are well-supported by experienced professionals.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of training through both PADI and SSI. Beginners can start with Try Scuba Diving or Open Water Diver courses, while those looking to advance can pursue Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, or Wreck Diver certifications.

For professional divers, the centre provides Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and Open Water Scuba Instructor training. They also offer specialised skill development such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Navigation, and various ecology-based courses including Shark Ecology and Marine Mammal Ecology.

The centre operates two robust semi-rigid boats to reach the offshore sites. ZIFIO is an 8.5m semi-rigid powered by a 350HP engine, with a capacity for 12 divers. LELO is a slightly smaller 7.5m semi-rigid with a 200HP engine, accommodating up to 10 divers.

Both vessels are maintained constantly to handle the Atlantic conditions. Nitrox is available on board to extend your bottom times during offshore excursions.

On shore, the centre provides full equipment hire through their partnership with Aqualung. They maintain a high standard of kit, with wetsuits renewed every two years and regular maintenance performed on all regulators and BCDs.

Air quality is a priority, with the centre using Bauer compressors certified with Pure Air and a Nitrox membrane system. This ensures you are breathing high-quality air for every dive.

The offshore sites are famous for large pelagic encounters. You can regularly see Mobula rays (Mobula alfredi), Manta rays (Mobula alfredi), and various sharks. Large fish such as Amberjack (Seriola), Tuna (Thunnus), and wahoos are frequently part of the local ecosystem.

In the blue water, you may also encounter Ocean sunfish (Mola mola), Jack (Carangidae), and Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda). The presence of various pelagic fish and large schooling fish makes every offshore trip a dynamic experience.

For those with an eye for detail, the reefs and seabed host a variety of smaller species. You might spot a Moray eel (Muraenidae), stingrays, round stingrays, or an Octopus (Octopus vulgaris). Red scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) and various reef fish add colour to the underwater landscape.
