This is a four-star coastal hotel on the North Devon cliffs, with sea views, a private beach and a thermal suite for the less energetic part of the day. The mood is more restorative than rowdy, which suits anyone who would rather hear the tide than a nightclub on the other side of the wall.

You will be understood in English throughout the hotel, including by the management team. Dogs are also welcome in designated rooms and around the grounds on leads, so the place is set up for more than one kind of coastal escape.

The hotel sits on the North Devon coast at Combe Martin Bay, in the Ilfracombe area, with cliffs, open sea and Exmoor National Park around it. The South West Coast Path runs by the property, giving you a choice between setting off on foot or simply staying close to the view. Exmoor is about 1.3 miles away by road, and the entrance to Exmoor National Park is around 4.3 miles away.

The private beach is reached from the hotel by woodland paths and cliff steps. Broadsands Beach is around 0.9 miles away by road, while Combe Martin Beach is about 1 mile away. Ilfracombe’s beaches and town centre are around 4 miles away by road, so you are close enough for a change of scene without being planted in the middle of it.

There are several nearby diversions for a non-diving day: Watermouth Castle is about 1 mile away by road, and the coast also opens towards the South West Coast Path, Lundy Island and the wider Exmoor landscape. Exeter International Airport is around 52 miles away by road.

For two people, the sea-view rooms are the obvious choice if the horizon matters as much as the bed. The balcony categories give you a private outdoor perch, while the larger double rooms provide more room to spread out after a day spent in wet kit and damp clothes. For the evening when you want to make more of it, The Seacliff Restaurant serves dinner in an air-conditioned interior overlooking the sea. It focuses on fine dining, local ingredients and seafood, with food recognised by three AA Rosettes and a Michelin Guide listing. There is also a hotel bar, so you can finish the day with a drink without having to set off for Ilfracombe.

The indoor swimming pool is heated and framed by large windows looking towards the Atlantic. It is the practical answer to a grey afternoon, or to the familiar post-water debate about whether anyone really wants to put outdoor clothes back on. On land, you can follow guided coastal walks, use the eight circular routes prepared by an Exmoor Park Ranger, cycle the Tarka Trail, explore Ilfracombe or visit Clovelly.
