La Palapa, Jan Thiel: Curaçao's Turtle Haven

La Palapa is located off the coast of Jan Thiel, Curaçao, with access directly from a rocky beach. This shore entry can be challenging if the ocean is rough, so assessing conditions before entering the water is important. Once submerged, the dive begins with a gradual descent over a sandy bottom, leading to a significant drop-off characteristic of a fringing reef system. This initial section provides a smooth transition as you move away from the shore, preparing for the deeper exploration ahead.

The dive profile at La Palapa takes you past a wall that drops to a sandy floor at around 40 metres. After this initial descent, you swim out into the blue water, leaving the main reef structure behind. This open-water crossing evokes a sensation of flight as you navigate a substantial distance to the next major feature. Maintaining good buoyancy is essential here to conserve air and energy as you move through the water column, bridging the gap between distinct reef sections.

Your objective after the open-water swim is a submerged coral mountain, which serves as the site's primary attraction. This pinnacle rises from the seabed and is a recognised resting point for a healthy population of sea turtles. You're likely to encounter green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) here, often found in crevasses or gliding peacefully over the coral structure. Observing these animals in their natural habitat requires patience and a calm approach.

Beyond the turtles, the coral mountain and surrounding reef structure host a variety of reef fish. You'll observe boxfish and angelfish navigating the coral formations, contributing to the site's overall biodiversity. Moray eels are also resident here, often seen peeking from their crevices within the reef. Keep an eye on the sandy areas near the pinnacle; stingrays are sometimes spotted here, blending with the bottom. These encounters add to the richness of the dive.

The topography of La Palapa sets it apart from many other sites in Curaçao due to its distinct, detached coral mountain.
