Superior Producer Wreck, Curaçao: an artificial reef near Jan Thiel

Diving the Superior Producer starts with the approach to the cruise ship pier, near Jan Thiel. Once below the pier, the light diffuses, giving way to the growing anticipation as the ship's outline gradually emerges from the blue. This dive offers a unique sense of discovery, swimming from a busy port environment to an underwater sanctuary.

The 50-meter cargo vessel, a steel skeleton now overgrown, settled upright on the sandy seabed in 1977. Its bow faces out, with the stern closer to the shore. The main deck structure sits at 25 metres, while the superstructure rises to 17 metres, making it accessible at different depth increments for exploration. The general layout of the wreck is straightforward, with the wheelhouse positioned towards the east from the bow.

As you reach the bow, you'll often encounter large schools of tarpons moving silently through the water, their silver scales reflecting the ambient light. These can be impressive, sometimes numbering in the dozens. The wreck's surfaces are heavily encrusted with colorful sponges and corals, providing habitat for a distinct population of reef fish.

Exploration can take you from the main deck at 25 metres down towards the sand at 34 metres where the hull meets the bottom. There are opportunities to penetrate the cargo holds and the wheelhouse for those with the appropriate experience and specialty training, offering a different perspective on the interior structure and the life that has taken hold within. Snappers and glassy sweepers are commonly found congregating in these more sheltered areas.

The Superior Producer provides a crucial artificial reef habitat that attracts a diversity of marine life beyond the expected reef fish. Barracudas are often seen patrolling the mast structures, and moray eels find refuge in the nooks and crannies of the corroded hull. The blend of structural complexity and abundant food sources makes it a focal point for the local ecosystem.

The site's position near the main shipping channel means that currents can be a factor. While not always present, periods of strong current are possible, especially with tidal changes. This variability dictates how you approach and navigate the wreck, and underscores the need for sound dive planning and awareness of your surroundings throughout the dive.

Access to the Superior Producer is dictated by port operations; diving is only permitted when no cruise ships are moored at the nearby Mega Pier. This logistical constraint adds to the feeling of a privileged visit to an often-inaccessible underwater world. The exit at the pier involves an ascent to an ladder, which can be challenging if there are waves, requiring some agility and attention.
