You will be understood in English, French and German by the hotel team. For couples, the appeal is simpler: your own cottage, outdoor seating, a private entrance and enough room to settle in without having to whisper around a hotel corridor.

You are in Bouillante, on Guadeloupe’s leeward coast, at 627 Chemin de l’habituée négresse, Route de Birloton. The property sits about 1.2 miles from the sea and around 1.3 miles from Malendure Beach, with the beach roughly 2 miles away by car. This is a base for the west coast, not a seafront address where you stroll straight from the gate into the water.

The surrounding area brings together beaches, thermal springs and the Cousteau Reserve. The hot baths at Bouillante are about 3.3 miles away by car, while Ravine Thomas Bain Chaud is around 5 miles away. You can also reach Saut de l’Acomat waterfall in roughly 7 miles by car, and Habitation Côte sous-le-Vent in about 7 miles. For dinner or coffee, several places are within a short drive, including La Côte Oueste, Franko Grill, Rosan Vairac Cafe and Chez Dada.

The accommodation is arranged as cottages and holiday homes rather than conventional hotel rooms. That matters when your day involves wet towels, dive bags and the usual collection of small objects that somehow multiply during a trip. The accommodation includes air conditioning, a walk-in shower, towels, linen and a mosquito net, so the night can be about sleep rather than negotiating with the local insect population.

A washing machine and dishwasher are particularly useful on a diving holiday, while the balcony or terrace gives you somewhere to sit outside. The cottages are set among tropical trees and garden views, with some accommodation offering a wider view. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, and the property is not accessible to guests with reduced mobility.

There is no restaurant or bar to organise your evening around. Instead, the cottages give you the equipment to make your own breakfast, prepare something simple when you are hungry and keep cold drinks ready in the fridge. The dining table works for a proper meal, not just balancing a plate on your knees, and the outdoor dining area lets you eat in the garden when the evening is doing its usual Caribbean work.

The barbecue is the useful detail here. Pick up supplies, put something on the grill and settle beside the pool rather than getting back in the car after a long day. The 4-by-8-metre outdoor swimming pool is the centrepiece, with a shower, sun loungers and pool toys. It is secure, which is useful for families, and it gives you an easy place to cool off without turning the afternoon into another expedition. An open-air bath adds another way to sit still and let the day drain away.

The garden supplies the setting for the slower options: outdoor furniture, a sun terrace and views into the tropical vegetation. Walking tours are available, while snorkelling, horse riding, hiking, canoeing and fishing take place away from the property. Equipment rental is available for water-based activities, giving you more scope than simply choosing between the pool and the sofa.

Families get outdoor play equipment, board games, puzzles and children’s books, DVDs or music. Babysitting is also available. For everyone else, the winning plan may be less ambitious: swim, sit in the shade, put the coffee on and leave the island’s natural wonders to tomorrow.

Pointe-à-Pitre Le Raizet Airport is about 26 miles away, with the drive taking around 50 minutes. Baillif Airport is closer at roughly 14 miles and about 31 minutes by car. Private parking is available on site, and WiFi is free throughout the property.

Check-in runs from 16:00 to 21:00, and you need to give the property your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 07:00 to 11:00. Entry to the property is closed between 21:30 and 07:00, with quiet hours from 22:00 to 07:00, so late-night arrivals and post-dinner noise require a little planning.

Private or express check-in and check-out are available, as is luggage storage. Children of any age are welcome, with cots available for babies aged up to two years; extra beds are not available. Pets are allowed. The property also offers a private bathroom in every accommodation, and the upper floors are accessible by stairs only.
