VOI Andilana Beach Resort is made for divers who want the day to keep working once the mask comes off: a beachfront resort, tropical gardens, three pools, several places to eat and an all-inclusive plan that keeps the practical decisions to a minimum. You can walk from your room to the sand, settle under a parasol, and let the afternoon become pleasantly unstructured.

The setting is substantial rather than boutique-sized, with 204 rooms spread across the resort and gardens covering 150,000 square metres. That gives you space to wander, but also means this is a lively resort with organised activities and evening entertainment rather than a hideaway built around whispering and early bedtimes.

The resort's website is available in English and Italian. Facilities include an on-site infirmary, a beauty salon, a Fashion Boutique and the Rhum & Chocolat gourmet shop, useful when you want to stay put instead of turning a post-dive afternoon into an expedition.

You are in Nosy Be, Madagascar, directly beside two private white-sand beaches. Together they stretch for more than 800 metres, with beach loungers, parasols and towels available for use. The sea is not a view reserved for the brochure: it starts at the edge of the resort.

Behind the shoreline, the property opens into a tropical garden with palms, baobabs, flamboyants, mango trees, jackfruit trees, vanilla and citrus. Giant tortoises, lemurs and chameleons are part of the resort's living surroundings; Carolina, a giant tortoise, is described as being more than 150 years old. Keep your camera handy, but do not expect the wildlife to pose on command. It has other plans.

Fascene Airport is around 13 miles away. Mount Passot is about 7 miles from the resort, Lokobe Reserve about 20 miles, and Restaurant Loulou around half a mile away by road. The tour desk can arrange excursions to places including Nosy Iranja, Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Fanihy, Lemurialand and Lokobe.

The room choice is mainly about what you want to wake up to and how much sleeping space you need. Sea-view rooms suit couples who want the horizon from the balcony; garden-view rooms trade the seascape for greenery. Rooms with two large beds make more sense when you are travelling with another diver and want separate sleeping arrangements, while the triple option gives a small group a more workable setup than trying to negotiate one bed after a day at sea.

Air conditioning matters here, particularly when you return warm, salty and ready to collapse rather than admire the architecture. Rooms also have private bathrooms, showers, complimentary toiletries, hairdryers, balconies or terraces, and an electric kettle. Daily housekeeping keeps the room from developing its own ecosystem, and free WiFi is available throughout the resort.

The balcony is the useful in-between space: somewhere to sit with a drink, dry yourself off and watch the light change over the garden or sea. Families are welcome, with cots available for babies in selected rooms; children aged two and over require a room arrangement that can accommodate an additional bed, and extra beds are not available in every option.

All-inclusive covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with three restaurants giving the menu a little more range than the usual buffet-only routine. Ravinala is the main international restaurant, serving buffet meals and including water, soft drinks, local beer and local wine with the meals. Breakfast starts at 07:00, which is the sort of detail a diver notices before anything involving coral or current.

The beach restaurant serves light lunches just 5 metres from the sea, with a relaxed, barefoot feel. Pily Pily brings local cooking and a panoramic view over the bay: lunch is a buffet, while dinner becomes a bookable set-menu occasion with an additional charge. The distinction is simple enough: Ravinala for dependable refuelling, the beach restaurant when you want sand under your feet, and Pily Pily when the evening deserves a proper change of scene.

There are two bars. Baobar stays open around the clock with coffee, tea, fruit smoothies, local beer, cocktails, soft drinks and national spirits; the Beach Bar puts much the same choice on the shoreline. A daily 17:00 tea time beside the pool adds Madagascar chocolate crêpes. Bottled drinks and imported alcohol carry an additional charge, so the all-inclusive label has sensible boundaries rather than magical powers.

The main pool is more than 50 metres long, with a maximum depth of 150 centimetres and three gently sloping entries where you can stay in the water while catching the sun. There is also an infinity hydromassage pool overlooking the ocean, set in an adults-only relaxation area, plus a private gazebo with its own pool and sun deck in the quieter part of the beach. The gazebo is bookable and carries an additional charge.

For a body that has spent the morning folded into dive gear, the massage centre offers massage and Sakalava massage, a traditional Malagasy treatment using locally associated oils and essential oils. The Technogym fitness room, light fitness classes and aquagym cover the more energetic interpretation of recovery; tennis, padel, beach tennis, beach volleyball, bocce, canoeing and a health trail provide alternatives when lying still starts to feel too ambitious.

Evenings are active rather than merely decorative, with a 21:30 pre-show followed by performances in the amphitheatre. Theme nights include Madagascar Day, Flower Power, White Night and Love Tree, while music, group dancing, games and sporting tournaments keep the resort's social side in view. Boat excursions include whale watching and trips linked to whale sharks, and the programme also reaches Nosy Iranja, Lokobe and Nosy Tanikely.

Airport transfers are available on request and can be arranged through the resort. Fascene Airport is around 13 miles away. A 24-hour reception, luggage storage, currency exchange, a tour desk and wake-up service make the less glamorous parts of travel easier to manage, while an infirmary is available on site.

Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 10:00. You need to give the resort your expected arrival time, particularly if the journey reaches into the later part of the evening. Cash, Visa and Mastercard are accepted, with payment possible in euros or ariary. WiFi is free throughout the resort, and the property has been designed with accessible rooms, adapted communal areas and easier routes around the site.

Children of all ages are welcome. Babies can have a cot in selected rooms, subject to the room layout, while children aged two and over need a suitable sleeping arrangement because extra beds are not available in every room. Guests under 18 must check in with a parent or official guardian, and pets are not allowed.
