Set on Fasmendhoo Island in Raa Atoll, Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive island resort built for guests who want the sea close, a proper choice of places to eat and enough room to slow down. You get beaches, lagoon, tropical surroundings and a villa rather than a standard hotel room, with the practical comforts that matter when the day has involved salt water and too much sun.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Russian, Chinese, Italian and German. That makes the first conversation about transfers, meals or your room refreshingly straightforward. The resort also has a 24-hour front desk, concierge service, private check-in and check-out, luggage storage and a tour desk, so the useful jobs do not have to wait until morning.

The resort occupies Fasmendhoo Island in Raa Atoll, Maldives, with a direct position on a white-sand beach. The island covers 20 hectares of land, surrounded by a 100-hectare lagoon, coral reefs and tropical scenery. You are not staying in a town with a beach nearby; you are staying on the island itself, with the beach and lagoon forming the immediate geography.

The main beach faces the turquoise ocean and lagoon, with loungers, parasols and a beach bar. Other beaches sit across the surrounding atoll, including Furaveri Island Beach at about 4 miles, Dhigali Maldives Beach at about 4.9 miles and Heritance Aarah Beach at about 5 miles. Ifuru Airport is about 17 miles away, while Dharavandhoo Airport is about 28 miles away; island logistics still matter here, as they do whenever the road ends before the water does.

The choice comes down less to whether you have space and more to where you want that space to sit. Beach Villas put you beside the sand, while Water Villas place you over the lagoon; both suit couples who want a private base with the sea doing the scenery. The Beach Villa with Pool and Water Villa with Pool add a private pool, while the versions with a jetted tub are the obvious pick if soaking is part of your post-dive recovery plan.

For families or larger groups, the Family Beach Villa gives everyone more room to spread out, while the larger multi-bedroom villas are designed for several guests travelling together. Seating and dining areas make the accommodation more usable than a room containing only a bed and a suitcase stand. The villas also have air conditioning, an overhead fan, a kettle, coffee machine, flat-screen satellite TV, Wi-Fi, a private bathroom with bath or shower, bathrobes and slippers.

At the Beach Club Grill, fresh fish, seafood, meat and vegetables are cooked on a stone grill, with pizza and pasta alongside them. No one has to pretend a plate of grilled food is not exactly what they wanted after a long day outside.

The Beach Pool Bar sits by the Beach Club Grill. Sunset Pool Café handles drinks beside the pool and beach, with music and billiards on the white sand, while Sunrise Café is aimed at early risers watching the Maldivian morning over the lagoon. There is also a snack bar, a minibar and extensive wine and beverage options within the all-inclusive arrangement.

The main decision after breakfast is whether to move. The Sunset Pool has views towards the evening light and a swim-up bar, while the main beach supplies white sand, loungers, parasols and direct access to the lagoon. Snorkelling, canoeing, windsurfing and cycling are available, and non-motorised water sports form part of the resort's activities; some water-sport facilities and private lessons are additional services.

Arrival is part of the island experience rather than a quick taxi ride. Seaplane transfers from Malé International Airport take about 40 minutes and arrive at the resort's private marina. A domestic flight takes about 35 minutes, followed by about 25 minutes by speedboat. Airport transfers can be arranged through the resort, and your arrival and departure flight details need to reach the property at least 72 hours before arrival so the same-day connection can be organised. Baggage restrictions also apply, so this is one trip where packing light is not merely a noble ambition.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to midnight and check-out is by 12:00. You need photo identification and the card used to guarantee the booking at check-in, and the resort asks for your expected arrival time.
