Hotel Belvedere

Family-run in spirit and maritime in its decoration, Hotel Belvedere is made for divers who like their base simple, coastal and properly useful. You are staying directly beside the Adriatic, with a large panoramic terrace, a restaurant and an aperitif bar ready for the part of the day when the logbook is closed and the sandals come out.

The hotel speaks English, German and Italian, so you can deal with the practicalities without resorting to underwater sign language. Its appeal is straightforward: a small seaside address where you can sleep in air-conditioned comfort, eat on site and step outside to the water rather than turning every evening into a taxi exercise.

You are in Sukošan, Croatia, on a small peninsula in the quieter coastal part of the resort. The hotel sits directly on the seafront, with its own rocky bathing terrace, a wooden jetty and a metal ladder into the sea. Sun loungers, parasols and showers are set up for the practical business of getting wet without needing to find another beach first.

The location also gives you a useful spread of Croatian distractions. Zadar is about 6 miles away, with its historic centre, Roman Forum, museums, parks and old city gates. Dječji raj Beach is roughly 300 metres away, while Podvare Beach is about 500 metres away; Soline Beach and Zlatna luka Beach are each around 1 mile away. Palac restaurant is about 250 feet from the hotel, with Porat and Konoba kod Guste within roughly 0.6 miles.

For a change of scenery, Kornati National Park is about 9 miles away, Lake Vrana is around a 25-minute drive and Paklenica Gorge National Park is about a 30-minute drive. The airport is close by, but the setting still feels coastal rather than airport-adjacent. A useful trick of geography, for once.

The room choice is mostly about how much space you want and what you would like to see from the balcony. Couples can keep things compact with a standard double room, or choose the double room with sea view when the Adriatic matters as much from the room as from the terrace. Most rooms overlook the sea, and every room has a private balcony, air conditioning, modern furniture and a private shower.

The triple room with balcony is the sensible call when three people need to share without turning the sleeping arrangements into a small logistics operation. For a family or a group of four, the family room with side sea view gives you the extra beds and breathing room that a compact double simply cannot provide. Children of any age are welcome, although children aged three and over are charged as adults, and cots and extra beds are not available.

Air conditioning matters here for a very practical reason: warm saltwater, sun and a full day outside are not always improved by a stuffy bedroom. You also have a wardrobe, clothes rack, seating area, desk, flat-screen television and free WiFi in the rooms. Daily housekeeping keeps the return from the beach or the boat pleasantly uneventful, while the balcony gives you somewhere to sit with the last light rather than balancing a drink on the bathroom shelf.

Breakfast is included and served as a buffet, with continental, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices. That gives you a decent range before a day outdoors, whether you want something familiar or need to avoid a particular ingredient. The hotel does not list a continuous snack service, so plan your between-meal hunger with that in mind rather than expecting food to appear at every hour.

Dinner is served at Restoran Belvedere from 17:30 to 22:00, on the terrace beside the sea. The kitchen works in a Dalmatian style, using fresh, carefully selected ingredients, and the wine list is part of the meal rather than a forgotten afterthought. It is the sort of setting where you can stay outside, watch the light go down and let somebody else deal with the evening’s main decision: grilled, fresh, or something involving a bottle.

There is one bar, the Aperitiv bar, for a drink before dinner or a slower finish afterwards. The house speciality is beef tartare prepared in front of you, with the ingredients adjusted to your preference. Not a buffet trick and not a mystery from the kitchen door: it is made at the table, in full view.

The direct sea access does most of the work here. The hotel’s bathing terrace is broad and smooth, with a wooden jetty leading to the water, a ladder for getting back out and showers for removing the obvious evidence. Sun loungers and parasols let you settle in without having to carry half the contents of your room to the shore.

When you want more movement than a slow turn on a sun lounger, cycling is available at the hotel, while water-sports facilities and a tennis court are on site. Hiking and canoeing are available away from the property. The arrangement suits a mixed day: one of you can stay by the sea with a book while the other goes off in search of a little exertion.

Massage is available, including full-body, back, neck, head, hand and foot treatments. For a longer outing, the hotel offers excursions to places including Telašćica Nature Park, Vransko jezero Nature Park, Velebit Nature Park, Kornati National Park, Krka National Park, Paklenica National Park, Northern Velebit National Park and Fun Park Biograd. Zadar’s historic centre is also close enough for an afternoon of museums, squares and old stone rather than another round of sun exposure.

Zadar Airport is about 3 miles away, and an airport shuttle is available from the hotel. You can arrange the transfer as part of the arrival plan, or use the location’s short road connection if you are hiring a car. Car hire is available, and free private parking is provided on site without the need to reserve a space.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 21:00 and check-out is by 11:00. Express and private check-in and check-out are available, alongside luggage storage, a tour desk and concierge service. That is useful when your flight and your room do not line up neatly, particularly on the first or last day.

Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so the room location is worth considering if stairs are an issue after a long travel day.
