Bumbište, Pula, Croatia: Wall Diving Exploration

Diving Bumbište means following a continuous, varied wall that stretches for over 200 metres. The entry is simple, directly from the shore, providing a secure start to the dive. Once submerged, you'll find the wall extending from a minimum depth of about 5-8 metres, dropping significantly as you move along the contour. This makes it suitable for progressive depth profiles, allowing you to explore different sections depending on your comfort and experience.

The wall itself is not a uniform structure; it's punctuated by several submarine caps and rock formations that create a complex topography. These features form overhangs and small shelters, adding visual interest and habitat for marine life. As you descend, the character of the wall changes, moving from gentler slopes in the shallower sections to vertical drops that push past 30 metres. Keeping the wall on your left, as is common practice, allows you to maintain orientation and effectively explore its length.

Life on the Bumbište wall is apparent in its sessile invertebrates. You will observe sponges, bryozoans, and cnidarians covering the rock surfaces, alongside various soft corals. This dense growth creates a vibrant, colourful tapestry, especially when illuminated under a dive light. These smaller organisms form the base of the ecosystem, attracting various fish species that shelter or feed among them, making the exploration of the wall a continuous discovery.

Beyond the encrusting life, Bumbište is frequented by several schooling fish. Look for aggregations of salema (Sarpa salpa) and sars (Diplodus sargus), often moving in coordinated patterns along the wall. Damselfish (Chromis chromis) are also common, darting among the crevices. These fish add dynamism to the dive, and their presence indicates a healthy, active ecosystem along the extensive wall structure. The various holes and rock formations serve as natural hiding spots and feeding grounds for these species.
