Hotel Aurora Plava Laguna

Greenery, open air and the Adriatic set the tone at Hotel Aurora Plava Laguna, a large seafront hotel in Umag with 306 rooms. It suits divers who want a proper base for the week rather than a room with a bed and little else: breakfast, a beach, a pool, restaurants, a wellness centre and enough to keep a non-diving companion occupied without turning every afternoon into a transfer.

You will be understood in English from the start. The hotel team also speaks German, Italian and Croatian, while the management operates in English. That matters when you are discussing breakfast, a late return, room service or the small practical details that become surprisingly important when you are tired, salty and carrying too many bags.

The building opened in 1969 and was last renovated in 2023. The feel is that of a full-service holiday hotel, with families, couples and active guests all part of the mix. Evening entertainment is available, so this is not an address built around enforced silence once the sun goes down.

You are on the coast at Istarska cesta 119, in Umag, Croatia, with direct access to a 100-metre golden-sand beach. Sun loungers, parasols, showers and a beach bar are laid out for the hours when you would rather read beside the water than discuss another excursion. Aurora Beach is close by, while Pine Beach is around 0.4 miles away and Katoro Beach around 0.5 miles away.

Umag town centre is 5 km away, keeping the hotel away from the town bustle while leaving the old town within reach by car. The Umag bus station is around 2 miles away. Nearby choices include Pizzeria Barka at roughly 0.6 miles, Caffe Bar punta at about 0.4 miles and the Umag Town Museum at around 1.6 miles.

If you want to make an outing of a non-diving day, the Roman Villa Rustica is around 1.3 miles away and Savudrija Lighthouse around 3.1 miles. Pula Airport is 43 miles from the hotel; Trieste Airport is another option at roughly 52 miles by road.

The room choice is mainly about how much room you want around the bed and which view you want to wake up to. For a couple who simply wants a balcony and a straightforward base, the Classic Room with Balcony on the park side keeps things simple. If the sea matters more than the extra floor space, the Premium Room with Balcony on the sea side is the obvious direction.

Families have a more practical arrangement in the Classic Family Room, with two single beds and bunk beds. Couples who prefer a little separation between sitting and sleeping space can look towards the Suite with Balcony. The Superior and Premium options both use two single beds with a sofa bed, which gives you flexibility for a third guest without pretending that a sofa bed is a second bedroom.

Every room is air-conditioned and has a private bathroom with a bath, television, desk, safety deposit box, wardrobe and hairdryer. A minibar is available for keeping drinks close at hand, while free WiFi works throughout the hotel. Non-smoking rooms and lift access are available, and room service covers the nights when the sensible plan is a shower, clean clothes and dinner without another walk.

Two restaurants give you a choice between Mediterranean food and a more direct Italian answer to the question of what to eat when you are hungry. Restaurant Mediteran serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on a terrace with sea views, in a relaxed dress code. Breakfast is a buffet from 7:00, with lunch served from 12:00 to 15:00 and dinner from 19:00 to 22:00.

Pizzeria Aurora handles lunch and dinner indoors, serving Italian pizzas from 12:00 to 23:00. That longer evening window is useful when a boat return, a slow shower and a conversation about the day's dive have pushed dinner later than planned. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices are available.

There are two bars. The Lobby Bar focuses on cocktails indoors, while the Pool Bar keeps drinks and snacks close to the swimming pool. The hotel works with a half-board formula, and room service is available with limited hours. A buffet breakfast, two restaurants and two bars mean you can stay on site without having to make every meal a research project.

The main outdoor pool is large, unheated and fitted with a swim-up bar. Sun loungers and umbrellas make it the straightforward place to spend an idle afternoon, while the direct beach access gives you a second setting when chlorinated water has had its turn. For a quieter reset, Wellness Center Aurora covers 200 square metres with massages, facials, a sauna and a jacuzzi.

The more energetic options are available without requiring a heroic effort. You can hire bicycles, play table tennis or use the tennis court, and the hotel has a gym with yoga classes. Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and boat excursions add some time on the water without repeating a full dive day.

For couples travelling with children, the kids’ club is aimed at ages 4 to 12, with children’s activities, babysitting and a children’s menu. When the evening calls for something other than another drink, live music and entertainment shows are part of the programme. Cultural excursions can take you to Poreč, Rovinj or Grožnjan.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to midnight, and check-out is from 07:00 to 10:00. A 24-hour front desk, luggage storage and a wake-up service cover the awkward edges of travel days, while car hire, laundry, ironing and a barber or beauty shop are available on site. A doctor can be requested through the hotel.

Private parking is available at the hotel, and airport transfers can be arranged with the hotel as a paid service. Pula Airport is around 43 miles away. Free WiFi covers the property, and the hotel also has a concierge, a business centre and five meeting rooms for anyone who has managed to bring work on a diving holiday.

Children of any age are welcome. Cots for children aged 0 to 2 can be requested, subject to the selected room option, while extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed.
