Deep Med - Freediving Malta & Gozo

Located in Marsalforn, Deep Med serves as a dedicated hub for freedivers looking to explore the unique underwater topography of Malta and Gozo. The school focuses on a holistic training methodology, emphasising knowledge, repetition, and the development of safe, sustainable habits through the Molchanovs framework.

Whether you are arriving by land or taking a boat to reach specific sites, the centre is positioned to provide access to both the sheltered bays of Gozo and the deeper wrecks of the Maltese coast. The setup is designed to support the specific physiological and mental requirements of breath-hold diving.

The school is led by Fabrice, a national record holder for Malta, ensuring that training is guided by high-level expertise. The instruction follows a structured progression, moving from foundational skills to advanced physiological conditioning.

Training is highly personalised, with a strict ratio of a maximum of two divers per guide or buoy. This ensures that safety and technical precision remain the priority during every session, whether you are undergoing a multi-day coaching programme or training with certified buddies.

Deep Med is a specialist Molchanovs training centre, offering a full progression of courses. This includes Wave 1 for beginners, followed by Wave 2, Wave 3, and advanced coaching and training programmes.

For those looking for a shorter introduction to the discipline, Freediving Taster programmes are available over one, two, or three days. The school also offers specific training in static apnea and personalised coaching sessions with an instructor for several days.

A private RIB is used to transport divers to more exclusive sites, allowing you to reach locations away from the crowds. This provides a more flexible approach to exploring the coastline and reaching deeper offshore spots.

The centre provides on-site accommodation specifically designed for freedivers, which includes a dedicated 100 m² relaxation space and a swimming pool for surface training and skill practice.

For those looking to train in the water before heading out to sea, the pool facilities offer a controlled environment to work on static apnea and technique.

The marine life around Gozo and Malta is diverse, with many species inhabiting the rocky reefs and caves. You will regularly encounter barracuda, snapper, European conger, octopus, cuttlefish, and squid.

In the shallower reef areas and tunnels, look for various species of nudibranchs and sea slugs. The rocky structures also host a variety of colourful life, including zoanthids and various types of sponges.

Macro life is prevalent throughout the area, particularly around the caves and crevices of Xlendi Bay and Ghar Lapsi, where octopus and cuttlefish are frequently sighted. Divers can also find various nudibranchs amongst the reef structures.

The waters around Gozo generally offer calm conditions due to the island's shape. Most sites are accessible year-round, with water temperatures typically starting around 20°C.

For wreck diving near Cirkewwa, access can be made via the natural alcove at Susie's Pool. Access to Gozo sites typically requires using the ferry from Malta.
