Mgarr ix-Xini, Gozo: Exploring the Sheltered Bay and Caves

Mgarr ix-Xini, nestled on Gozo's southern coast, provides a sheltered entry directly from a shingle beach, making it one of the most accessible dives on the island. The initial swim covers a shallow, protected area, transitioning from a rocky bottom that gradually descends to a sandy plain around 5 meters. This shallow zone is ideal for acclimatization and offers the first glimpses of the site's resident marine life.

As you move further into the bay, the bottom continues its gentle slope, reaching depths of 13-14 meters in the central area. The underwater landscape here is dominated by a rocky reef system, rich with crevices and overhangs that provide ample hiding spots for various species. Navigation is straightforward: you can follow the reef walls on either side of the bay, each presenting its own character.

The western side of Mgarr ix-Xini is particularly notable for two distinct caves. The first cave extends further into the rock, leading you through an overhead environment that is both spacious and naturally lit. Deeper within, the second cave offers another opportunity for exploration, though it is shallower. These formations create unique habitats and provide a focus point for the dive, inviting closer inspection of the walls and ceilings.

Below 15 meters, the site extends to a maximum depth of 30 meters, where the topography remains engaging with additional rocky reefs and sandy patches. This deeper section, while still serene, attracts a different array of marine life compared to the shallower reef. Experienced divers can explore these further reaches, where the subtle changes in depth and substrate present new photographic opportunities.

Despite its mild demeanor, Mgarr ix-Xini hosts a diverse array of marine species. On the sandy bottom, especially in areas with seagrass, careful observation can reveal seahorses and small rays. The rocky reefs and cave entrances are alive with octopus, cuttlefish, moray eels, and lizardfish. You might also encounter flying gurnards (Dactylopterus volitans) moving gracefully across the sand, or scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) camouflaged against the rock.

This bay is also a known location for some less common encounters. Occasionally, you may spot electric rays (Torpedo marmorata) resting discretely on the sandy seabed. During night dives, the site transforms, with large crabs emerging from their hiding spots and the possibility of seeing barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) patrolling the edges of the reef. The excellent visibility across the bay, often reaching 20-40 meters, enhances these encounters, making marine life observation particularly rewarding.

Mgarr ix-Xini's sheltered position ensures that it often remains diveable even during winter months, when other sites might be exposed to rougher seas. This consistent access, combined with its calm, clear waters, makes it a favored spot for photographers focusing on macro subjects, as well as for new divers building confidence in open water. The gentle slopes and manageable depths allow for extended bottom times and relaxed exploration.
