Technical Diving Malta

Situated in the heart of Xewkija on the main road between Mgarr and Victoria, Gozo Diving Malta serves as a premier hub for divers exploring the Maltese archipelago. The centre has been established for over three decades, building a reputation for high-level instruction and a deep understanding of the local underwater topography.

The area around Gozo and Malta is renowned for some of Europe's most accessible and diverse dive sites. You will find a landscape defined by dramatic walls, deep wrecks, intricate swim-throughs, and cavernous structures that cater to both the recreational enthusiast and the advanced technical diver.

The centre is led by Tom Steiner, a technical instructor trainer with over 40 years of experience and more than 17,000 logged dives. The instructor team is composed of highly qualified professionals, including cave and technical specialists, all of whom focus on a patient, methodical approach to skill acquisition.

To maintain a high standard of safety and individual attention, the centre operates with small groups, limiting the ratio to a maximum of three divers per guide. This ensures that whether you are working on basic buoyancy or complex decompression protocols, you receive the necessary guidance and supervision.

All instruction is conducted in English. The facility is a full-service centre, meaning you can manage your training, equipment needs, and accommodation through a single point of contact.

The course catalogue is extensive, ranging from initial Scuba Discovery and Open Water Diver certifications to advanced professional programmes. For those looking to refine their skills, the centre offers PADI specialty courses such as Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Advanced Buoyancy Control.

Technical training is a core pillar of the centre's identity, with TDI and SDI affiliations providing pathways into Sidemount, Cave, and Rebreather (CCR) diving. They also serve as an Instructor Training Centre, meaning they are capable of training the next generation of dive professionals.

The centre is fully equipped to support both recreational and technical diving requirements. On-site, you will find a dedicated training pool and a classroom for theory work. A full range of equipment is available for hire, covering all your needs from regulators to wetsuits.

For technical divers, the centre provides a specialised gas blending station capable of supplying Nitrox and Trimix. This allows for precise gas planning and the ability to prepare for deep or extended decompression dives directly from the centre.

The Mediterranean waters around Gozo are teeming with life, from large pelagics to intricate reef dwellers. You can expect to see schools of fish including Jack (Carangidae), Amberjack (Seriola), and various species of Sea bream (Sparidae) and Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) patrolling the walls.

Predatory fish such as Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), Tuna (Thunnus), and Common dentex (Dentex dentex) are frequently encountered. You may also spot more elusive species like the Atlantic lizardfish (Synodus saurus) or various types of Grouper (Epinephelus) near the structures of the reef.

Macro life and smaller creatures provide constant interest for the observant diver. The seabed and crevices are home to Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), Cuttlefish (Sepiidae), and various species of Crab (Brachyura) and Shrimp (Caridea). Look closely for Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda), and different types of Wrasse (Labridae).

Invertebrates and fixed life add significant colour to the environment. You will find a variety of Sponges (Porifera), Star coral, and Tube worms, alongside more mobile species like Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), Lobster (Homaridae), and various types of Eel (Anguilliformes) or Moray eel (Muraenidae).

Diving in the region is characterised by excellent conditions, with visibility frequently exceeding 30 metres. The local topography provides a wide variety of environments, from shallow reef flats to deep walls and wrecks.

While the Mediterranean offers a wide range of sites, divers should always be prepared for the specific conditions of the day, particularly when planning technical dives involving currents or deeper exposures.
