Vanas Dive

Vanas Dive is a specialist diving school and centre located in Barcelona, founded by Xavi and Oliver. For 15 years, they have operated with a clear philosophy: to provide a personalised diving experience that avoids the pitfalls of industrialised tourism. This approach has allowed them to build a community of over 500 members and certify more than a thousand divers.

The centre serves as a gateway to the Mediterranean's varied underwater landscapes. While based in Barcelona, they frequently organise excursions to the Costa Brava, including trips to Palamós and Cadaqués. These outings allow you to move beyond the local city dives and explore more complex environments like deep reefs and protected marine areas.

The team is composed of highly experienced instructors with deep roots in the local diving scene. Oliver serves as the technical lead and has been instructing since 2008, while Gabi has been a PADI instructor since 2010 with a specific focus on technical diving and equipment maintenance. Senda, a PADI and SSI instructor since 2014, brings expertise in continuous training and dive travel.

As an affiliate of both PADI and SSI, the centre is equipped to handle a wide range of certification requirements. The instructors focus on a convivial, small-group atmosphere, ensuring that whether you are a novice or an experienced diver, the instruction remains precise and professional.

Vanas Dive provides a comprehensive curriculum for all levels of experience. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or a formal 'Baptême de plongée' to get comfortable in the water. For those looking to build their credentials, the centre offers the full range of PADI and SSI courses, including Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver.

More advanced divers can pursue specialised training through various specialties. The course catalogue includes PADI Deep Diver Specialty, Nitrox Diver Specialty, Night Diver Specialty, and the Stress and Rescue course. This allows you to tailor your training to specific environments, such as deep wrecks or nocturnal exploration.

For those who prefer not to carry their own heavy kit, the centre offers full equipment hire. This includes wetsuits, BCDs (or stab jackets), regulators, fins, masks, and snorkels. Please note that dive computers and torches are not included in the standard hire package.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom times. The centre is also equipped to handle various training and exploration needs, with a focus on maintaining high standards of equipment service.

The Mediterranean waters around Barcelona and the Costa Brava are home to a diverse array of species. You will regularly encounter large pelagics and reef dwellers such as Great barracuda, groupers, and various species of moray eel. Schools of gilt-head bream, sargos, and damselfish are common sights along the rocky structures.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants provide endless interest for observant divers. You can find octopus, spiny lobster, and various nudibranchs tucked into the crevices of the reefs. For those diving at night, squid are a particular highlight.

In the deeper or more protected areas like Cap de Creus, the biodiversity increases. You may spot more impressive specimens including sharks, ocean sunfish, and large conger eels. During the winter months, keep an eye out for anglerfish and peces de San Pedro.

The centre operates seasonally, with the diving season typically closed from November to March. During the active months, divers can expect a variety of environments ranging from shallow shore dives to deeper offshore excursions.

Local diving in Barcelona often involves exploring jetties and artificial reefs, while trips to the Costa Brava can introduce more varied topography. Always check the local swell and current conditions with your guide before heading out, especially when exploring the more exposed areas of the coast.
