Mangamar Dive Center

Mangamar Dive Center is situated right in the heart of the Cabo de Palos harbour, with its two dive boats moored directly in front of the centre. This prime location allows for seamless transitions from the shop to the water, making it a highly efficient base for daily diving. The centre is owned and operated by Martin and Brenda van Gestel, a PADI Course Director Platinum and Silver respectively.

As a PADI 5 Star Career Development Center, the facility is designed to support divers at every stage of their journey. Whether you are looking to complete your first Open Water Diver course or are an aspiring professional working towards your Instructor rating, the infrastructure is in place to facilitate serious progression. The centre also organises diving trips to international destinations such as Costa Rica and Baja California.

The instructional team is led by highly qualified professionals, including internal PADI Course Directors. This high level of expertise ensures that training, from basic skills to advanced professional development, is handled with technical precision. The team is multilingual, capable of providing instruction and guidance in Spanish, English, Dutch, French, German, and Italian.

Safety and personal attention are central to the centre's operation, with a strict limit of five divers per guide. This small ratio allows for a more relaxed atmosphere and ensures that your buddy pair or small group receives the necessary supervision, especially when navigating more complex sites like deep wrecks or the marine reserve.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses, catering to all experience levels. Beginners can start with PADI Discover Scuba Diving or the PADI Open Water Diver course, while those looking to progress can enrol in the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or PADI Rescue Diver programmes.

For divers looking to specialise, there is a vast catalogue of PADI Specialty courses, including Wreck Diver, Deep Diver, Drift Diver, Sidemount, and Drysuit Diver. The centre is also a hub for professional training, offering Divemaster, Instructor, and IDC Staff Instructor programmes, as well as Gas Blender and Oxygen Provider training.

The centre operates two main vessels for its excursions. The Ares is a 10-diver capacity boat, while the Kaiser offers more space with a capacity for 14 divers. Both boats are used for a variety of trips, including local dives, marine reserve excursions, and night dives.

Nitrox is available on board to support extended bottom times. The boats provide access to the diverse sites around Cabo de Palos, from the shallow reefs to the deeper wrecks located further out.

The shore-based facilities include a dedicated dive shop, changing rooms, and hot showers. There is also a rinsing area for your kit and a terrace for relaxing between dives. For those who prefer not to carry their own heavy equipment, a full range of rental kit is available, including regulators, wetsuits, and fins.

Nitrox is available on-site, and the centre is an official reseller for major brands such as Scubapro, Aqualung, Apeks, Cressi, X-Deep, and Fourth Element. The shop is well-stocked with professional-grade equipment to suit various diving styles, from sidemount to technical diving.

The marine life around Cabo de Palos is exceptionally diverse due to the protection of the marine reserve. You will regularly encounter large schools of fish, groupers, moray eels, and great barracuda. Sea turtles and eagle rays are also common sightings along the reefs and walls.

Macro life enthusiasts can find plenty to observe, including various species of nudibranchs and octopus. The area's rocky structures and crevices provide a home for many smaller inhabitants, making every dive an opportunity for close-up observation.

In the summer months, the area becomes a prime location for spotting the ocean sunfish (Mola mola). Throughout the year, the reefs are populated by a variety of resident species, including dolphins and various species of puffer fish.

Diving in this region involves navigating various underwater topographies, from shallow reef flats to deep offshore wrecks. While many sites are accessible to a wide range of divers, the deeper wrecks and the marine reserve can involve currents and require advanced buoyancy control.

Personal dive computers are mandatory for all dives within the Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve. Additionally, personal dive insurance is required for diving in the reserve, though it can be arranged through the centre on a daily basis.
