Merak Diving Mahón

Merak Diving is established in the historic port of Mahón, Menorca, serving as a gateway to the island's most protected waters. The centre's location allows for efficient access to the Reserva Marina de Isla del Aire, home to some of the most distinctive underwater topography in the Balearic Islands.

Since 2004, the team has focused on providing structured diving experiences, whether you are looking for a relaxed introductory dive or pursuing advanced technical certifications. The centre operates year-round, ensuring that the local rock formations, tunnels, and wrecks remain accessible regardless of the season.

The centre is run by a team of four qualified instructors, providing a professional environment for both recreational and professional divers. They are an SSI affiliated centre and a DAN Partner, which underscores their commitment to safety and standardisation in dive operations.

Instruction is available in English, Spanish, and French, making it easy to navigate course theory and dive planning. For those looking to move into the professional ranks, the centre offers SSI professional pathways including the Instructor Training Course (ITC) and Crossover programmes.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the full spectrum of SSI certifications. Beginners can start with Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver courses, while more experienced divers can progress through Advanced Adventurer, Specialty Diver, and Master Diver levels.

Specialty training is a core part of the centre's offering, with specific modules for Nitrox (EAN 32 and 40), Deep Diving, Decompression Diving, and Dry Suit diving. They also provide essential skills training such as Perfect Buoyancy, Navigation, and Stress & Rescue, alongside the React Right programme. For those pursuing a career in diving, the centre provides the necessary professional training through the ITC and Crossover courses.

The centre operates two speed boats for dive trips, which allow for quick transit to the various sites around the Isla del Aire and the coast of Alcaufar. These vessels are used for daily exploration dives, night dives, and specialty training sessions.

The shore-based facilities include a 150 m² space equipped with changing rooms for men and women, featuring hot showers and Wi-Fi. A dedicated study room is available for those undertaking theoretical components of SSI courses.

Full equipment hire is provided, with the centre utilising Mares kit. This includes a range of essential items such as wetsuits, regulators, and fins. For divers looking to extend their range, dry suit rental is also available on-site.

The marine life around Mahón is defined by the rocky topography of the reserve. You will frequently encounter large groupers, barracuda, and various species of eels, including both moray eels and conger eels. The rocky crevices and canyons are also home to scorpionfish and rascasses.

For those interested in macro life, the area provides plenty of interest. Divers can find a variety of nudibranchs on the rocks, as well as octopuses and various species of stingrays on the sandy patches near the reef flats.

In the more sheltered areas and sandy bottoms, you may also observe small rays and various reef fish navigating the seagrass and rock formations.

Diving in the area is heavily influenced by the local geography, with certain sites like S'Estancia providing excellent shelter when the Tramontana wind is blowing. The topography includes a mix of deep walls, canyons, and shallow reef flats.

Navigation often involves moving between rocky outcrops and sandy areas, with sites ranging from very shallow entry points to deep wrecks and vertical walls.
