Vadum Maris Diving Center Tabarca

Vadum Maris is situated in Santa Pola, Alicante, positioned directly across from the Tabarca Island Marine Reserve. This location provides immediate access to some of the most significant Mediterranean marine ecosystems, where the clarity of the water and the density of life are the primary draws for divers.

Founded in 2020, the centre operates with a strong focus on sustainable diving practices and marine education. By integrating biological expertise into their dive operations, they aim to provide a deeper understanding of the Mediterranean's flora and fauna while protecting the delicate habitats of the reserve.

The team is led by José Manuel Sánchez, a national diving instructor and professional boat skipper who also works with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography. He is joined by Daniel Banegas, a manager and instructor with a background in Marine Sciences.

This combination of professional diving expertise and biological knowledge allows the centre to offer a specialised approach to underwater exploration. The staff is able to communicate in Spanish, English, and French, making the centre accessible to a wide range of international divers.

Vadum Maris offers a complete curriculum through both SSI and FEDAS/CMAS affiliations. Beginners can start with Try Scuba or Basic Diver programmes, progressing through the standard Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications.

For those looking to specialise, the centre provides a wide array of SSI courses, including Nitrox Diver, Deep Diver, Sidemount, and Dry Suit training. Advanced divers can pursue professional paths such as Divemaster, or technical training including Decompression Diving and specialized skills like Search and Recovery or Navigation.

The centre operates a 7.5m semi-rigid vessel powered by a 230cv engine. The boat is designed to accommodate up to 14 divers and features a T-Top to provide shade from the sun during the transit to the reserve.

For comfort on the water, the boat is equipped with a Bluetooth audio system. The vessel is specifically configured for diving, featuring an elevated cylinder rack to keep equipment organised and an professional ladder for easy access during entries and exits.

The shore-based facilities in Santa Pola are comprehensive, featuring a professional multimedia classroom for theory sessions, a dedicated equipment room, and separate changing rooms for men and women. There is also a dedicated rinsing area and a workshop for equipment maintenance.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit for those not travelling with their own. Their technical capabilities include an on-site station for filling air, Nitrox, and Trimix cylinders. For divers requiring specialised assistance, the workshop is equipped to handle repairs for regulators and drysuits.

The marine life in the Tabarca reserve is exceptionally diverse, particularly around the rocky reefs and seagrass meadows. You will frequently encounter large groupers (Mycteroperca spp.), barracuda, dentex, and amberjack patrolling the edges of the structures. In the sandy areas and seagrass beds, eagle rays and southern stingrays are common, alongside various species of rays.

Macro life is abundant for those who look closely. The reefs are home to a vast array of nudibranchs, octopus, and various species of moray eel. You can also find spiny lobster, slipper lobsters, and numerous crustaceans like shrimp and hermit crabs tucked into the crevices.

The ecosystem is supported by extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea. These habitats provide essential shelter for smaller species such as gobies, soles, and many types of small fish, including seabream, mullet, and various wrasse species.

The dive sites are located within a protected marine reserve, which helps maintain a stable environment for the local species. Divers should be aware that certain areas, such as the Vadum Maris site, may contain traces of fishing gear like trammel nets, requiring increased situational awareness.

Navigation and depth vary significantly between sites, ranging from shallow rocky outcrops at 1 metre to deeper wreck sites at 30 metres. A responsible diving test is required to access the Tabarca Marine Reserve, which must be renewed every two years.
