Les Jardins de Toumana

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside French, German and Arabic, so you can deal with the practicalities without resorting to underwater hand signals. French is also spoken by the management. That matters when you are arranging an airport transfer, sorting out dinner or simply trying to explain that the air conditioning is not doing what it should.

Les Jardins de Toumana is a small residence built around ten suites, with white walls, shaded courtyards, palms, olive trees and flowering gardens. The atmosphere is closer to a low-rise Mediterranean retreat than a large holiday complex: your accommodation comes with its own terrace, and the gardens do much of the visual work without needing a marching band.

Couples can settle into the slower pace, while families have roomier options, including a duplex suite for larger groups. A private entrance, seating areas and soundproofed rooms make the layout practical when different members of the party are operating on different levels of post-dive fatigue.

The address is in Triffa, Tunisia, on the coast of Djerba. The residence has direct beach access, with sun loungers and parasols, while Mezraia Beach is around half a mile away. Sidi Mahrez Beach is roughly 1.5 miles from the property by road, so you have several stretches of sand to choose from rather than a single compulsory viewpoint.

You are also close enough to leave the grounds when the urge for a change of scene arrives. Café Marakech is about 300 metres away, Lounge de Thé Gratuit roughly 300 metres on foot, and Cote de Buf around 0.7 miles away. The Casino is a two-minute drive, and a golf course is about a five-minute drive.

For a cultural afternoon, Djerba Explore Park, the Lalla Hadria Museum and the Crocodile Farm are all around 4 miles away. The airport is approximately 12 miles by road, with a drive of about 20 minutes. This is a coastal base with useful distractions nearby, not a property stranded behind a toll gate and three vague roundabouts.

The accommodation is apartment-style rather than a simple room with somewhere to put a suitcase. Every apartment has a fully equipped kitchenette with a microwave, kitchenware and dining area, plus a private terrace. That gives you somewhere to sit with a coffee, unpack without balancing everything on the bed and keep a little control over meals when your appetite arrives at an inconvenient hour.

For a couple, the Superior Apartment is the straightforward choice: enough space to live in rather than merely sleep in, with a private bathroom and the option of pool or garden views. Solo divers have a dedicated Superior Single Room, while the Family Junior Suite uses a large bed and sofa beds for groups of up to four. The Duplex Suite is the one to consider when six people need to share without turning every evening into a logistical exercise; it has two bathrooms and more room to spread out.

Air conditioning helps take the edge off hot, salty days, while heating and soundproofed rooms matter when the season turns cooler or the evening carries on outside. You also have Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a television, wardrobe space, a hairdryer and a shower. The terrace, dining table and seating area are the useful parts: somewhere to dry ordinary clothes, drink water and sit down before deciding whether dinner is genuinely necessary.

Tazzert is the main restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner on its terrace. The kitchen works with Mediterranean and Tunisian cooking, drawing on Djerban traditions and fresh local produce. The result, on paper at least, is the right sort of menu for a diving holiday: familiar Mediterranean options alongside food with a clear sense of place, rather than a buffet designed to offend nobody and interest nobody either.

Breakfast is a buffet, and half-board is available for residents. That arrangement suits you if you want the evening meal dealt with at the hotel after a full day out, while the restaurant also welcomes outside visitors when you prefer to eat earlier or later elsewhere.

There are two bars, each with a different job. La Tavla is the rooftop bar, serving cocktails from 18:00 to 02:00 between June and October. The Beach Bar stays closer to the water, with drinks and light snacks in the afternoon and evening. A coffee house, snack bar, minibar and in-room breakfast add further ways to manage the gap between getting out of the sea and sitting down properly at the table.

The outdoor pool sits among Mediterranean gardens, with sun loungers, parasols and pool or beach towels available. It is the obvious place to spend a non-diving afternoon when the sea has had enough of you, or when your surface interval has somehow expanded into the whole day. A children's pool and indoor play area make the residence workable for mixed-age groups, while board games and a games room cover the less ambitious moments.

For a quieter reset, massages and body treatments are available, along with facial treatments, beauty services, manicures and hair treatments. These are the sorts of options that make sense when your shoulders have spent several days carrying equipment and your idea of exercise is walking to the shade. The pool area and gardens provide the simpler version: a lounger, a book and no timetable worth defending.

You can also arrange bicycle rental and bike tours, play mini golf or table tennis, and take part in cycling. Horse riding, canoeing and golf are available nearby, while the hotel team organises excursions and guided visits. Possible outings include Houmt Souk, Guellala, the Ghriba synagogue, the island of the pink flamingos and traditional pottery in Guellala. Evenings may bring karaoke, concerts or DJ events, depending on the programme.

An airport transfer can be arranged on request, and car hire is available on site. Djerba–Zarzis International Airport is about 12 miles away by road, with a journey of roughly 20 minutes. Free private parking is available at the residence, including parking-garage facilities, so arriving with a hire car is perfectly workable.

Check-in runs from 14:00, with a 24-hour reception and private or express check-in and check-out services. The hotel's own details set check-out at 11:00, while the booking policy gives a departure window from 05:30 to 12:00; if you have an early flight or a late departure, confirm the arrangement before travelling rather than discovering the difference at reception with a suitcase in each hand.

Luggage storage, a tour desk, concierge service, currency exchange and daily housekeeping are available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Children of all ages are welcome; cots can be requested for children aged up to three, while extra beds are not available. Cash is an accepted payment method, and pets are not allowed.
