Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa

Set on Vanua Levu, this is a resort for divers who do not want the whole holiday to revolve around a dive boat. You can have the sea close by, a rainforest spa when your shoulders need attention, and enough space for a proper family stay rather than a room with an extra bed wedged into the corner. Couples have adult-only waterfront and over-water options, while larger villas and two-bedroom bungalows suit families or groups travelling together.

The tone is more spread-out resort than compact hotel. Your accommodation sits within landscaped tropical grounds, with the lagoon, gardens and forest shaping the stay. Air conditioning, a balcony, refrigerator, tea and coffee facilities and a minibar are included across the accommodation range, which matters when you return warm, salty and ready for cold water rather than conversation.

You are on Hibiscus Highway in Savusavu, Fiji, on the island of Vanua Levu. The resort is directly on the waterfront, with a private sandy beach and access to a sheltered lagoon from some of the accommodation. The setting combines shoreline, reef, jungle and rainforest rather than a built-up town strip.

Savusavu Airstrip is a ten-minute drive away, making the final leg straightforward once you land. The resort also sits within reach of Savusavu itself, while its concierge can arrange tours and local outings. For a change of scenery, the programme includes visits to the town and market, villages, waterfalls, a pearl farm and the Kokomana chocolate factory.

The choice is mainly about how close you want to feel to the water, how much privacy you need, and whether you are travelling as a couple or with family. An adult-only over-water bungalow puts the emphasis firmly on the lagoon, while an adult-only waterfront bungalow gives you a more conventional base beside the water. For a couple wanting room to spread out, the waterfront villa adds generous living space, a super-king bed, a sofa bed and a king-size bed.

Families have more useful solutions than a single shared room: two-bedroom bungalows come with two bathrooms, and the three-bedroom river-view villa accommodates larger groups. Several villas and bungalows have private pools, including waterfront, marina-view, tree-top and lighthouse options. The adults-only categories keep the mood more couple-focused; the family pool, children’s pool, kids’ club and babysitting make the wider resort workable for mixed-age parties.

Every unit is air-conditioned and has a balcony, refrigerator, tea and coffee facilities and a minibar. That gives you somewhere to keep water cold and a place to sit outside while the day’s salt dries off. Some villas also have a DVD and CD player, a small but useful detail if the evening calls for an old film rather than another organised activity. Daily housekeeping is available, along with room service and packed lunches for days spent away from the main table.

The main dining room, Palm Grove Restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Its cooking combines Pacific and European styles, using produce from the resort’s organic gardens, locally supplied seafood, and meat from New Zealand or Australia. The menu changes with the seasons and supplies, so this is not a one-dish-fits-all operation dressed up as island dining.

Lunch offers four choices, while dinner follows a changing three-course table d’hôte format with dessert. The full-board formula covers the day’s main meals, and packed lunches are available when an excursion gets in the way of lunch at Palm Grove. Breakfast is continental, with vegetarian and gluten-free choices; vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets are also catered for.

There are three distinct places to drink or eat. Levu Bar sits inside Palm Grove and covers tropical cocktails, local and international beers and wines from around the world. Latitude 17 Seafood and Steak Restaurant occupies a lagoon-side position with ocean views and serves dinner on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, focusing on seafood, steak, Asian and Thai flavours. For something less formal, Sand Bar & Grill is open-air and waterside, with meals and snacks during the day and Jack’s rum-infused cocktail bar alongside it.

Ten outdoor pools give you plenty of alternatives to the lagoon, including private pools attached to selected villas and bungalows, a family pool and the infinity pool at Mountain Top Villa. Sun loungers and beach chairs are available around the resort, while the private beach gives you a simple place to sit with a book and let the afternoon make its own arrangements.

The Rainforest Spa is the more sensible destination when your back has had enough of carrying dive gear. Treatments include massage, body wraps and scrubs, with a signature coconut-oil massage, a sustainable banana-leaf body wrap and couples’ massages among the choices. In-room massages can also be arranged, so you do not necessarily need to walk any further than your own bungalow.

When you want to move, there is tennis, pickleball, volleyball, cycling, hiking, croquet, bocce, lawn games and a golf course within 3 km. Kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling take you onto the water without committing to another full dive day. Cultural activities include cooking classes, herbal walks, coconut and lovo demonstrations, village visits and Fijian meke dancing. Families also have a kids’ club with daily activities, outdoor play equipment, games, a children’s pool and babysitting.

Savusavu Airport transfers are complimentary, and the airstrip is a ten-minute drive from the resort. Transfers to and from Labasa Airport are also included in the resort’s accommodation arrangements. Car hire, a tour desk, concierge service and free private parking are available, while Wi-Fi is free in public areas rather than described as a full in-room service.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is by 10:00. Children of any age are welcome, although children aged 13 and over are charged as adults. Cots and extra beds are not available, so choose a bungalow or villa with the required sleeping arrangement rather than relying on an extra bed at the last minute.

The resort does not accept cash, and pets are not allowed. The full-board arrangement, airport transfer and daily resort activities make the practical side fairly contained, but cancellation and prepayment rules vary by accommodation type, so the conditions attached to your chosen unit matter.

The resort describes its approach as eco-friendly, with the preservation of the surrounding marine environment as a stated priority. Divers are asked not to remove or damage coral, fish or other marine life, and spear guns are prohibited throughout the resort’s diving activities.

The kitchen also uses ingredients from the resort’s organic gardens, alongside fresh seafood from local suppliers. It is a practical link between the land around your bungalow and what reaches your plate, rather than a separate conservation speech pinned to the noticeboard.
