The atmosphere is practical rather than formal. You can come back from the water, put the kettle on, settle into the seating area or head straight for the spa pool without negotiating a restaurant timetable. Families fit comfortably into the arrangement, while couples can choose a sea-view apartment and make rather more of the bay than a standard hotel window usually allows.

You are in Paihia, in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, at 44 Marsden Road. The swimming beach is directly across the road, so getting to the sand requires more crossing than expedition. Paihia Wharf is about 0.2 miles away, with ferries departing for the historic town of Russell.

Paihia village is a three-minute stroll, bringing shops, cafés and restaurants within easy reach. JFC is about 0.05 miles away, while 35 Degrees South and CBK are roughly 0.2 miles away. For a change of scene, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds are around 1.8 miles away, and Haruru Falls about 4.3 miles by road.

The setting also works well if you have a car. Free private parking is available on site, with one space allocated per apartment, and the Bay of Islands Airport is about a 20-minute drive away.

These are proper self-contained apartments, not rooms with a microwave pretending to be a kitchen. You get two bedrooms, a large lounge and dining area, a full kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, toaster and kitchenware. Each apartment has air conditioning and heating, a private laundry with washing machine and tumble dryer, a bathroom with bath or shower and a spa bath, plus a private balcony with barbecue. There is also a 32-inch flat-screen TV and free WiFi. The combination is well suited to a longer diving stay: sort your own breakfast, wash clothes as needed and let the spa bath do some of the evening’s work.

The dining arrangement is self-catering. Your apartment has the equipment for a real meal, from the oven and hob to the dishwasher, fridge and dining table. The private balcony barbecue gives you another option when the weather behaves and you would rather eat outside than put on proper shoes again.
