You cross Johannesburg on foot under one roof, which is rare enough to mention. The problem is not distance; it is the transfer security check.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
You can walk the whole connection but transfer security takes the margin.
- International and domestic flights share the same roof, linked by corridors marked “International Transfers”. There is no internal shuttle to wait for.
- ⚠️ The displayed 60 min for international-to-international is a system minimum. The real pinch point is the dedicated transfer security check: allow 90 min instead.
- ⚠️ A DOMESTIC flight is different: immigration, baggage reclaim, customs, a new domestic check-in and security again. Allow 2 hrs at minimum; 3 hrs gives you breathing room.
2–5 hrs
The terminal is comfortable enough, but anything useful costs extra.
- ⚠️ Wi-Fi is free in every terminal, but CAPPED around 4 hours or 1 GB. Do not start a download when you arrive.
- ⚠️ There are no public showers. Washing means using a lounge, sometimes with an extra charge on top.
- Left luggage is in the basement of the international terminal and is chargeable. It is one of the few African hubs here with an identified facility.
- The waiting areas are adequate but basic: no fitted rest area, garden or official quiet room.
5–10 hrs
Getting out is simple on paper concentrate on getting back.
- VISA REQUIRED South Africa waives visas for short stays for holders of most European passports. The usual conditions still apply: a valid travel document, proof of funds and an onward ticket.
- NO VISA if you remain airside, the lounge and waiting areas will see you through half a day.
- ⚠️ The airport runs no city tour. If you go out, you make your own arrangements and the calculation is the return: check-in, immigration and security again, at an airport where that is the weak point.
10 hrs +
Sleep. There is an international-zone room without needing a visa.
- NO VISA a transit hotel sits in the international zone, so you can sleep without crossing immigration. That settles matters when your passport or the hour makes going out inconvenient.
- VISA REQUIRED several familiar hotel brands sit a few minutes from the airport and provide a shuttle. This is the more comfortable answer for a full night.

What catches travellers out
60 min is the system figure, not the terminal figure
The displayed international-to-international minimum does not account for transfer security, the airport bottleneck. 90 min is the realistic figure.
International to domestic is a full entry process
Having everything under one roof changes none of the formalities: once your second flight is domestic, you need immigration, baggage reclaim, customs and a new check-in. Allow 2–3 hrs.
Free Wi-Fi is capped
It is available in every terminal, but limited by time or data volume. On an 8 hours layover, it stops halfway through keep enough offline material or be ready to pay for more.

You can buy access at the Bidvest Premier door with a bank card and it is the only place here where you can shower.
Clear up the first misconception: several O.R. Tambo lounges sell single-entry access without loyalty status or a particular cabin, simply on production of your boarding pass.
There are NO public showers at Johannesburg. Every shower is behind a lounge door.
⚠️ A shower is not always included with entry. Some lounges charge extra, while others offer it “subject to availability”. Ask before paying for access, not afterwards.
Airline lounges South African, British and Emirates require the relevant cabin or status. Check the exact lounge name.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for 3 hours of peace, with a shower potentially extra.

- This is the answer when an overnight layover falls badly or you do not want to take your kit landside.
- Book directly with the property: booking through the usual platforms is not guaranteed for the airside section.

- You must clear immigration on the way out and back straightforward with a European passport, but it adds 2 security passes.

The diver’s reflex
⭐ On the flight to the coast, your bag may stay behind
The regional carrier serving KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique states this plainly, which is unusually candid: its aircraft serve small airfields, and hold space can be restricted when the aircraft is full or weather requires it. In that case, some baggage goes on the next flight. You arrive; your kit does not. When your first dive is the following morning, the answer is simple: your wetsuit can wait, but your regulator and computer travel with you in the cabin. Two further lines matter before you zip the bag: the economy allowance falls to 20 kg on this sector, and only regularly shaped bags with at least 1 flat side are accepted. A large soft round bag does not qualify.
Transfer security is designed to slow you down
This is the airport’s recognised weak point, and a diver’s cabin bag is exactly what makes it worse: regulator, computer, torches, spare batteries and camera housing create an X-ray image that invites a hand search. The advertised 60 min does not account for that. Allow 90 min, and pack the bag so that you can open and close it quickly.
For Durban or Richards Bay, it is a full entry process
You reach the KwaZulu-Natal coast on a DOMESTIC flight from Johannesburg. You therefore clear immigration, collect your dive bag, pass customs, check it in again domestic-side and clear security again. This is not a 2 hrs connection allow 3 hrs, and check the allowance on the second ticket, which is often lower.
Ask whether the shower is included BEFORE paying for the lounge
Johannesburg has no public showers, and lounges do not all handle them alike: some include them with entry, at least 1 charges extra, and elsewhere they are “subject to availability”. After an overnight flight and before a hop to the coast, it is worth asking at the lounge desk.
