Brisbane International Airport BNE
Brisbane is where you change for Cairns and the Whitsundays, but its international and domestic terminals are 4 km apart. Your domestic connection means entering Australia, clearing immigration and biosecurity, then crossing landside.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Within the same terminal, it is quick. Between terminals, it is a different sort of day.
- For an international-to-international connection in Terminal 1, you remain airside: no immigration, only another security check. The published minimum is 30 minutes; 40 to 60 minutes is realistic.
- ⚠️ The terminals are 4 km apart, with no usable pedestrian route between them. The free shuttle runs landside from 4 am to 1:30 am, every 10 to 15 minutes, for a journey of around 10 minutes. There is also a faster train, but it is paid.
- ⚠️ The published international-to-domestic minimum is 90 minutes. Take 2 hours instead. You have immigration, customs, biosecurity, the bus, re-check-in and another security screening to get through.
2–5 hrs
⭐ The shower is free here. Just bring something to dry yourself with.
- Free showers are in the public toilets of both terminals. Internationally, they are on the Arrivals level and on level 3 after security; domestically, near gates 36 and 26. ⚠️ No towels or toiletries are provided.
- Wi-Fi is free and unlimited in both terminals after registering with an email address.
- There is no official rest area, but the quieter international spots are around gates 80 to 82, where there are padded seats. They are noticeably calmer at night.
- ⚠️ There is no left-luggage facility airside. Paid lockers are landside, by the international parking area; using them means leaving the secure area and clearing security again.
5–10 hrs
⚠️ Visa-free transit ends at 8 hours even if you never leave the terminal.
- ⭐ Below 8 hours, if you remain in the international area, do not collect your baggage and hold a confirmed onward ticket, you transit without applying for anything.
- ⚠️ Above 8 hours, if you leave the airport, or if you transfer to the domestic terminal, you need authorisation obtained BEFORE travelling. Australia issues NO visa on arrival for European passports: without approved authorisation, your airline can refuse boarding at your departure airport.
- Depending on your circumstances, this is either transit authorisation valid for a few days or a broader visitor authorisation. Both are applied for online.
- The airport runs no city tour. You can reach Brisbane easily by train from the terminals, but that requires authorisation and clearance through immigration and biosecurity.
10 hrs +
At this length, authorisation is already required and there is no bed airside.
- ⚠️ A 10-hour stopover exceeds the 8-hour ceiling: authorisation is required whether you leave the terminal or not.
- ⚠️ Brisbane has no hotel in the secure area. Your night is spent after immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED several hotel brands are within a few minutes of the airport and provide shuttles. A night there is less tiring than an airport chair, particularly before an early reef flight.
- No airline free-night scheme applies to a stopover you have chosen yourself.
What catches travellers out
At 8 hours, visa-free transit stops
This is the Australian rule, and it catches people out: above 8 hours of stopover, you need authorisation EVEN IF YOU STAY airside. You cannot obtain it at an arrivals desk.
The terminals are 4 km apart
You cannot walk between them. The shuttle is free but runs landside and stops during the middle of the night; the train is faster but paid. Either way, you must first enter Australia.
The second lounge opens only in the morning
The mezzanine lounge keeps short hours and limits the length of your visit. On an afternoon or overnight stopover, it will be no help at all. Check before crossing the terminal.
Why not wait it out in peace?
For subtitles in English: start the video firstthen click the gearat the top right of the video, select “Subtitles/CC”, then “Auto-translate” and choose “English”.
At Brisbane, you do not buy lounge access for a shower: the showers are free. You buy a proper seated meal, a quieter corner and a socket between two long flights.
First, the useful bit: Brisbane provides FREE showers in the public toilets of both terminals. For many stopovers, that is enough provided you have brought a towel.
A lounge starts to make sense when the wait drags on: a proper seated meal, some quiet, and a socket of your own for charging torches and a camera housing before the reef flight.
You can buy access by the visit, in slots of a few hours, without membership or status and regardless of airline.
⚠️ A second independent lounge sits on the mezzanine, but opens only in the morning and limits your stay. Check its opening hours before crossing the terminal airline lounges are not sold to walk-ins.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for two to three hours of peace.

The highest-rated option in the airport area, a few minutes from both terminals.
- Choose it when your stopover warrants a proper night before an early domestic flight to the reef.
- You must clear immigration, customs and biosecurity, so your electronic authorisation must be approved.

The same area, more restrained the sensible choice for a short night.
- Straightforward, predictable rooms: all you need from a stopover night.
- Confirm the shuttle and its timetable. Queensland domestic flights leave early.
The diver’s reflex
⭐ Your wetsuit must be declared, clean and dry
Australian biosecurity explicitly names wetsuits among sporting equipment that must be declared. Anything wet elsewhere wetsuit, BCD, fins, boots must arrive cleaned and dry, and must be declared on your passenger card. Declaring it does not create a problem, even if it needs treatment; failing to declare it can bring an immediate fine. At Brisbane, you clear this control as soon as you transfer to the domestic terminal so if you are going diving, you will clear it.
Your reef flight is 4 km away
Cairns, Hamilton Island and Gladstone flights all leave from the domestic terminal, 4 km from the international terminal, with no pedestrian route. You must therefore clear immigration, customs and biosecurity, collect your dive bag, take a bus, check it in again and pass security once more. The published 90-minute minimum leaves no margin. Allow 2 hours.
The shower is free; the towel is not
Brisbane is one of the few airports where you can wash without paying, using the public toilets in both terminals. Nothing is supplied, though. You will have a microfibre towel somewhere in your kit; take it out of your hold bag before check-in, because it will be more useful here than anywhere else on the journey.
