Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport SYD
In Australia, visa-free transit ends at 8 hours, even if you stay airside. Beyond that, you need an electronic travel authority before you leave home.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
International to international is straightforward. Connecting to a domestic flight is rather less so.
- For an international-to-international connection, the Flight Connections area handles you through its own security screening, without immigration, and your bags continue through. Allow 20 to 45 minutes for the transfer itself.
- ⚠️ For a DOMESTIC flight, everything changes: Terminal 1 is separate from Terminals 2 and 3, and the shuttle between them runs landside. You must clear immigration, customs and biosecurity, then check in again and pass security. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the transfer itself, with considerably more margin.
- The terminal shuttle is free, runs roughly every 15 minutes from 5:30 to 22:30, and takes around 10 minutes. Terminals 2 and 3 are linked on foot by a walkway.
2–5 hrs
The terminal is comfortable enough, but anything that makes it easier costs extra.
- Wi-Fi is free throughout the terminals.
- ⚠️ There are no free showers, no official quiet room and no airside left-luggage facility the available storage is landside.
- The quietest seating tends to be by the furthest piers. It is not scientific, but it works.
5–10 hrs
⚠️ This is where the 8-hour rule matters read on.
- ⭐ IN AUSTRALIA, VISA-FREE TRANSIT IS CAPPED AT 8 HOURS, even if you remain airside. Below that limit, with a confirmed onward ticket and valid documents, you can stay airside without applying for anything.
- ⚠️ Beyond 8 hours or if you leave the airport, or connect to a domestic flight you need an electronic travel authority. Apply ONLINE BEFORE DEPARTURE: there is no equivalent available at a desk when you arrive.
- Check with your airline that your connection is handled airside. It decides the matter.
- The airport runs no city tour. You can explore Sydney independently by train from the terminals, but this requires the electronic travel authority, immigration and biosecurity both on the way out and back.
10 hrs +
⚠️ The terminal CLOSES overnight sleeping there is not an option.
- ⚠️ This is the only airport in this set of thirty-six where the building closes. International Terminal 1 shuts from 23:00 to 2:30, the domestic terminals are locked overnight, and no flights are scheduled between 23:00 and 6:00 a curfew written into law since 1995. A small waiting area remains by the railway station, but it is not a terminal. An overnight stop therefore means staying IN THE CITY, arranged when you book rather than at 22:30 with a dive bag on your shoulder.
- ⚠️ A 10-hour stopover exceeds the 8-hour limit by definition: the electronic travel authority is required whether you leave the airport or not. Sort it out when you book the ticket.
- ⚠️ Sydney has no hotel in the secure area. The only hotel in the terminal is at Terminal 1 ARRIVALS level, after immigration and customs.
- VISA REQUIRED Mascot, around the airport, has plenty of accommodation within walking distance or a short shuttle ride. It is one of the better-served airports here for an overnight stop.
- Airlines do not provide a complimentary overnight programme for a stopover you chose yourself.
What catches travellers out
At 8 hours, visa-free transit ends even airside
This catches more people out than any other rule, because it has no equivalent at the other hubs in these guides. Elsewhere, staying in the transit area removes the need for entry permission. Here, beyond 8 hours, you need an electronic travel authority without crossing immigration.
You cannot apply for the authority on arrival
There is no visa desk for European passport holders. Apply online for the electronic travel authority before departure; without it, the airline can refuse boarding at the outset, not merely immigration on arrival.
The terminal shuttle goes landside
It is free and regular, which makes it look like an internal shuttle. It is not: using it means satisfying immigration, customs and biosecurity requirements. It also stops in the evening.
Why not wait it out in peace?

At Terminal 1, Plaza Premium sells single-entry access and it is the only way to get an airside shower.
Clear up the first misconception: this lounge is not limited to business-class passengers. You can buy access online or at the door for a set period, whatever your airline or cabin.
Sydney has no free showers. Showers in airline lounges Qantas, Air New Zealand and Emirates are for their premium passengers or status holders, and cannot be bought separately.
After a flight from Europe, with Cairns still ahead, it is the only way to arrive at the boat looking vaguely civilised.
A second paid lounge sits near gate 50, also on a day-access basis. ⚠️ Do not confuse it with the Arrivals lounge landside: that one means clearing immigration.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for two to three hours of peace and a shower.

The nearest bed is in the terminal itself, but after immigration.
- You can book it by the hour or overnight, which suits a stopover that does not justify a full night.
- ⚠️ Despite being inside the building, it is landside: you must clear immigration, customs and biosecurity, so you need the electronic travel authority.

A proper room opposite Terminal 1, within walking distance.
- Walking from the terminal avoids a shuttle or taxi welcome when you are carrying twenty-five kilograms.
- Mascot has many more options across all budget levels, only a few minutes away.

The diver’s reflex
⭐ Your wetsuit must be DECLARED, clean and dry
Australia applies some of the strictest biosecurity controls in the world, and its authority explicitly names wetsuits among the sporting equipment concerned. Anything wet elsewhere wetsuit, BCD, fins, boots must be cleaned, dried and DECLARED on your passenger card on arrival. Declaring it carries no penalty, even if the item needs treatment. Failing to declare it brings an immediate fine, and a false declaration can lead to prosecution. Rinse and dry everything before closing the bag: it is the best quarter of an hour you will spend on this trip.
Your Cairns flight means entering Australia
The Great Barrier Reef is reached on a domestic flight, and the domestic terminals do not connect with the international terminal: the shuttle between them runs landside. You therefore clear immigration, customs and biosecurity, collect your dive bag, check it in again and pass security again. You need the electronic travel authority whatever the length of your stopover.
A Europe-to-Cairns journey nearly always exceeds 8 hours
The 8-hour limit looks generous until you examine real schedules: connections from Europe to Queensland regularly run beyond it. For a diver heading to the Great Barrier Reef, the electronic travel authority is therefore required in practice. Apply when you book, not the day before.
